Clinton court’s shortlist emerges

Posted by | July 30, 2016 16:31 | Filed under: Politics

Hillary Clinton insiders have some names they believe would be likely Supreme Court nominees.

Topping the list, insiders say, is [Merrick] Garland.

He’s an obvious choice, having already completed the background checks from the FBI and the American Bar Association to be a Supreme Court nominee; that process can take up to four months.

Other top contenders for a Clinton appointment would be Sri Srinivasan, a judge on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and Jane Kelly, a judge on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. The Obama White House reportedly considered both judges this year before the president nominated Garland.

Srinivasan would be the first Indian-American and Hindu to serve on the court, but his nomination could face resistance from the left due to his past work representing corporate clients.

While an attorney for O’Melveny & Myers, Srinivasan reportedly defended ExxonMobil and mining giant Rio Tinto against allegations of human rights abuses in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

Paul Watford, an African American judge on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is also being mentioned as a potential Clinton nominee, along with Jacqueline Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American judge on the same court.

It better not be Klobitchar. She agrees with the religious right about censorship of porn. She needs to be stopped now (by free speech advocates) before Hillary even has a chance to consider her.

If you are referring to Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and her support for The Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011, exactly what is your problem?

Please explain how any of the following violate the first amendment. Unless you are a connoiseur of child pornography, all of these initiatives sound like a good idea to me.

      Make it a crime to financially facilitate access to child pornography;

      Require Internet service providers to retain information such as subscriber network addresses for a minimum of 18 months;

      Expand existing authority to issue administrative subpoenas while investigating federal offenses involving the sexual exploitation or abuse of children;

Protect child witnesses and victims in criminal investigations from intimidation and harassment; and

Enhance criminal penalties or sentences for crimes such as child pornography or the sex trafficking of children.

Just the latest of thousands of reasons to be a fan of arc99….

        • arc99 July 30th, 2016 at 19:20

thx burqa. I have in-laws in Minnesota, so I have a passing acquaintance with the record of Sen. Klobuchar as well as her much better known colleague Sen. Franken. I had a hunch the drive-by poster was full of it. ..

But regular porn is still OK right?
Have an acquaintance that ended up in prison for clicking on one of those sites that end up just sending you somewhere else, and one of the sites was underage girls, whether he lingered to long or it only takes 5 seconds for you to be guilty I don’t know, but he was turned in and the investigation ended up with him in jail.

Nearly half of the members of the U.S. Senate are urging Attorney General Eric Holder to step up federal prosecutions of adult pornography.

The signatures on the letter from socially-conservative Republicans… and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.

The letter proposes no new legislation. They advocate for enforcing existing laws.

For decades, the courts have gone back and forth over the extent to which pornography is protected by the first amendment.

If the worst that can be said about Sen. Klobuchar is that she signed a letter advocating enforcement of EXISTING LAW which MIGHT have first amendment implications, as far as I am concerned, this is the ultimate non-issue.

          • shane_c July 31st, 2016 at 03:36

A letter that has 1st amend implications should be an issue when youre considering that person for the supreme court. I mean come on. Dont just defend her because she’s a democrat and a woman. If her position is essentially the same as the religious right then a liberal should not want that kind of person on the court. Theres plenty of other nominees that are better.

    • arc99 July 30th, 2016 at 18:36

and idiotic word play on the Senator’s last name tell me only one thing.

you have no facts to back up your argument.

    • burqa July 30th, 2016 at 19:06

      Hmmmm.
It’s not often a child porn fan graces our forum.

      bra-vo.

    • mistlesuede July 31st, 2016 at 00:30

You may want to check your spelling of the Senator’s name.
      That was totally uncalled for.

      • shane_c July 31st, 2016 at 01:07

She’ll get A LOT worse if she’s nominated and people find out she agrees with the religious right about porn. So she better get use to it.

        • mistlesuede July 31st, 2016 at 01:22

          Big man huh?
If this is your issue, I really feel sorry for you.

          • shane_c July 31st, 2016 at 01:30

Its The 1st amendment. I feel sorry for you that you dont care.

            • mistlesuede July 31st, 2016 at 01:40

              About porn? Seriously?
              Wow.

              • shane_c July 31st, 2016 at 03:42

Too bad Klobitchar doesn’t feel that way too.

                • mistlesuede July 31st, 2016 at 23:33

                  Whatever.
                  I’m not interested.

        • arc99 July 31st, 2016 at 02:23

I am about as far left as it gets. I could care less what consenting adults do in private, or what they choose to video tape and post online.

Having said that, if you think, Sen. Klobuchar’s signature on that letter will in any way jeopardize whatever career aspirations she has in public life, you are woefully out of touch.

          • shane_c July 31st, 2016 at 03:40

It will effect her if she is a nominee, everything about her will come out. Free speech advocates, aclu… Im sure will dig this up. If you dont think they will then you are the one thats out of touch.

We should do it now though, stop her nomination before it even gets considered. Thats why I brought it up.

  2. burqa July 30th, 2016 at 19:09

One hopes she will consider revising her list.
I’d like to see President Obama on there as well as Bill Clinton and Michelle Obama…

  3. mistlesuede July 31st, 2016 at 00:29

Let’s just make sure that it is President Hillary Clinton who makes these decisions.

    • whatthe46 July 31st, 2016 at 00:35

i want her to pick Obama’s first choice. talk about heads exploding. he’ll get his pick in this way if need be.

      • mistlesuede July 31st, 2016 at 00:36

I’m going to assume they kind of have a pact on that.

        • whatthe46 July 31st, 2016 at 00:37

          i hope we’re both right.

          • mistlesuede July 31st, 2016 at 00:47
