When not under pressure to reflect a political agenda, the Navy typically names ships for Marines or sailors who were highly decorated, typically with the Medal of Honor or Navy Cross. There are many of these heroes who have not had ships named after them and deciding to name ships for politicians further deprives the honor from those who are more deserving.

Name a street, park or public building after Milk. Put up a statue.
But stop trying to introduce politics into the military.

Otherwise, the next time the GOP elects a president we may see Navy ships named for Sarah Palin, Roger Ailes, Karl Rove, Michelle Bachmann, Jerry Falwell, Arthur Laffer or Sean Hannity.
Imagine getting a letter from your kid who enlisted, saying he or she had been assigned to sea duty aboard the USS Michael Savage.…………….
