Internal revolt at NRA over Castile shooting

Posted by | July 9, 2016 16:12 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

The National Rifle Association is in turmoil over its response, or lack thereof, to shootings of young black man by police.

People claiming to be lifelong members of the NRA challenged the group’s stance on gun rights after the organization appeared to drag its feet in addressing the police-involved shooting in Falcon Heights, Minn., of Philando Castile, a law-abiding gun owner, which had already garnered national attention.

The organization released a statement on the shooting following the attack in Dallas that left five officers dead. Although the NRA obliquely referenced Castile’s death by referring to “reports from Minnesota,” it neither named Castile directly nor took a position on the matter.

“It is important for the NRA not to comment while the investigation is ongoing,” the organization said. “Rest assured, the NRA will have more to say once all the facts are known.”

…The NRA statement does not mention the officers killed in the line of duty, emphasizing instead the “right of law-abiding Americans to carry firearms for defense of themselves and others.”

…the NRA faces an internal division as its members argue that the group did not do enough to defend gun owners’ rights by speaking out on behalf of Castile.

Castile had a valid permit to carry a gun. He also reportedly informed the officer who shot him that he was armed, in an attempt to head off a misunderstanding.

Still, Castile was killed by police — prompting outrage among some Americans that following the rules was not enough to save Castile from a violent death.

because they didn’t mean for the rights of people of color to own guns. a disclaimer should come on the box of guns when purchased that specifically states: NRA WARNING if you’re a person of color, you are purchasing at your own risk.

“Following the rules” isn’t enough to get anybody off who’s in the sights of the Man. If they want you, they will get you, period. Thus it has always been, and thus it shall ever be. In corporate Amerika, the only thing “following the rules” gets you is the back of the line.

It is like they are finally taking the blindfolds off and realizing the NRA doesn’t stand for gun rights for all. They only want gun rights for whities, wait till they find out they only want it for rich whities.

Are you trying to say that not everybody in the NRA are racist like Ted Nugent, you learn something new everyday!

i think it’s about being pretentious. they don’t want to alienate buyers. they don’t give a damn about people of color. this to me, is only a “smart” business move. they want money from whoever has it.

      • Tommie July 9th, 2016 at 18:08

I can see that but maybe they all are not racist either!

I don’t see why there should be any tension over this issue. The man was a CC permit holder and according to the eyewitness informed the officer of this fact prior to being shot as he reached for his wallet in order to produce his permit. The man should be fully supported by the NRA for the egregious violation of his fundamental rights.

Just saw a report from a local station about the shooting. The “broken tail-light” story seems to be just that – a story. According to captured audio, it’s because of Castile’s nose:

“I’m going to stop a car,” the officer says on the recording. “I’m going to check IDs. I have reason to pull it over.”

“The two occupants just look like people that were involved in a robbery,” the officer says. “The driver looks more like one of our suspects, just ‘cause of the wide set nose,” the officer continues.

A minute and a half later, the recording captures the first report that there was a shooting.

Officer: “Shots fired Larpenteur and Fry.”
Dispatch: “Copy you just heard it? … You just heard the shots fired?”
Officer: (screaming) “Code 3! Shots fired.”
Dispatch: “Copy shots fired Larpenteur and Fry. Do you need medics?”
    Officer: “Code 3!”
Dispatch: “Copy. Medics — code 3 to Larpenteur and Fry.”
Officer: “One adult female taken into custody. Driver at gunpoint.”

this was calculated and thought out. he was going to execute someone and he did. he LIED and he should be arrested and charged with first degree intentional and premeditated murder, held without bond and sentenced to life without parole and placed in general population.

“It is important for the NRA not to comment while the investigation is ongoing,” the organization said.

Why? You’re not a government agency.
You just wish that you were.

I think we can both agree that for all intents and purposes they already are. :(
