Chilcot report: Iraq invasion based on flawed intelligence and assessments

The official report of Britain’s involvement in the Iraq war is a damning indictment of the war and of then-Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Some of the families of British service personnel who lost their lives in the Iraq War say they feel their loved ones died in vain, following a damning official report into Britain’s role in the conflict.
“When I look at Iraq on our TV screens today, the 200-plus deaths that took place the other day, I can only conclude that unfortunately and sadly, my son died in vain,” Reg Keys, whose son died serving in Iraq, said at a news conference Wednesday…

“Military action in Iraq might have been necessary at some point, but in March 2003 there was no imminent threat from Saddam Hussein,” John Chilcot, chairman of a British inquiry into the UK’s role in the Iraq War, said Wednesday.
The “strategy of containment” could have continued for some time, he said.

Speaking ahead of the release of the long-awaited report in London, Chilcot said former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was warned of the risks of regional instability and the rise of terrorism before the invasion of Iraq, but pressed on regardless…

Blair’s decision to invade Iraq was influenced by his interest in protecting the UK’s relationship with the United States, he said.

John Chilcot, chairman of a British inquiry into the country’s role in the Iraq War, said in releasing the report that Britain joined the invasion of Iraq “before the peaceful options had been exhausted,” and that preparations for the aftermath were “wholly inadequate.”
UK policy was based on “flawed intelligence and assessments,” he said. “They were not challenged and they should have been.”

That photo has always upset me a little. I think back at what I had to go through to earn that jacket. It used to be exclusive to Naval aviators, flight officers and air crewmembers.

It should upset you. Dubya was a disgrace to the uniform, to the office of the Presidency, and to all America.
Seeing him strut about on that carrier, announcing “Mission Accomplished” was an affront beyond words.
And he lives a quiet and well funded retirement, while thousands died, suffered, and lack basic housing and care today.

There is no doubt that is a cool jacket and should only be worn by guys like you William that earned it.

….and every photo I see dubya in upsets me.

        William,

To be fair, Bush did sober up long enough to go to flight school. for the Texas Air National Guard.

Although he famously couldn’t stay sober long enough to finish his commitment.

We’re you allowed to cut out early?

        • William July 6th, 2016 at 13:05

The jacket he is wearing is exclusive to the Naval Aviation community, and although not particularly practical, it is symbolic. His father earned one, Jr. did not. The Air Force /ANG jacket is different.

Now the FBI is free to investigate why Bush was so hellbent on invading Iraq.

Iraq invasion based on flawed intelligence and assessments..And it only took the Brits 7 years to figure this out?

  5. crc3 July 6th, 2016 at 11:34

Tell us something we don’t know! All I care about is seeing Bush, Blair and all of their confederates tried and punished for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Of course the chances of anything happening to them is slim and none…

“Flawed” is the polite way to say it.

The intelligence was an intentional lie, designed to start a needless war.

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/feb/15/defector-admits-wmd-lies-iraq-war

And the Bush Administration knew this and repeated the lie because they also wanted this needless war.

People should be in jail for this deception.

Really? They just figured that out NOW? I knew that way back when military recruiting offices were looking for a fresh batch of soldiers. That’s why I refused to let my son enlist. It’s about time England caught onto the big money-making scam which was the Iraq war.

Good thing they don’t have access to what’s left of the 911 commission report (28 pages )
