Republicans agree to gun votes after 15-hour Democratic filibuster

Posted by | June 16, 2016 07:02 | Filed under: Politics

That’s what it took for the Republican Senate to agree to votes on two gun control measures.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, said that a compromise had been reached. Votes would be held on whether to ban people on the government’s terrorist watch list from obtaining gun licenses and whether to expand background checks to gun shows and internet sales, he added.

“We did not have that commitment when we started today,” Murphy said.

Good, but not too confident Repukes would vote in favor of gun controls though… let’s hope they do… bloody bastards!

    • cogitoergodavesum June 16th, 2016 at 08:26

Meh. The ones with NRA money will vote it down.

  2. mea_mark June 16th, 2016 at 08:25

I would be happy this is happening if it wasn’t for all the lives lost in the last few years because politicians didn’t want to do their job and look after the American people. The people should come first not companies, especially companies that make guns that kill people. This is years too late.

    • Ron Theison June 16th, 2016 at 11:09

Their job not to look after the American people, but that the people’s rights are not violated or diminished. My Daddy is not a politician in Washington.

      • mea_mark June 16th, 2016 at 12:26

That explains why your comments sometimes don’t seem to jive with reality, you don’t understand the role of government.

        • Mensa Member June 16th, 2016 at 12:41

Conservatives fancy themselves as “Constitutional originalists” but don’t bother to read it.

The Constitution clearly explains the purposes of government and one is insuring domestic tranquility.

Getting military weapons off the streets certainly fits within that mandate.

I always looked at filibusters as nothing more than hissy-fits by congress critters. Never thought they accomplished anything. Apparently I was wrong.

My Senator did a great job and I am very proud of him.

      • halfwayin June 16th, 2016 at 09:30

Durbin had the best quote on the floor.

He said, “If you need an assault rifle to hunt with you should probably stick to fishing.”

        • Suzanne McFly June 16th, 2016 at 09:45

I listened to it for a couple hours while I was doing other things. Senator Murphy became emotional a couple of times, I am just amazed by this filibuster compared to the one cruz participated in.

          • Ron Theison June 16th, 2016 at 11:07

Cruz was standing up for the Constitution, the Democrats are standing against it – that’s the difference. Hey, when some politician stands up and says we need to do away with the internet and your computer because terrorists use them also, will you be cheering then?

            • OldLefty June 16th, 2016 at 11:14

Cruz wouldn’t know the Constitution if it bit him on the nose.

              • Ron Theison June 16th, 2016 at 13:41

Actually, he’s one of the few in the Congress, be they Republican of Democrat, who really knows and respects the Constitution. We have come so far from a constitutional republic run under a Federalist system it isn’t funny.

                • OldLefty June 16th, 2016 at 13:54

When might we see evidence of that?

Are you saying that he just plays someone with contempt for the Constitution and the Founding principles on TV?

If you want to stick with the founding principles, you are better off with Obama than these guys who want the government in the bedroom, the Church and the womb.

            • Suzanne McFly June 16th, 2016 at 13:19

Please tell me what Dr. Suess book he was reading when he was “standing up” for the Constitution? No wonder rump is leading the republican party, you tools buy into everything they say even when their actions prove they only put themselves first. You are lucky most of us have brains and rescued the country from destruction by the bush “Presidency”, so you should be here saying “thank you, thank you, thank you…” but that would require a working brain cell, won’t hold my breath for that one.

              • Ron Theison June 16th, 2016 at 13:34

Mr. Obama came on the scene talking about the constitution, civil rights, and transparency and we have seen anything but him holding up to those things. Do you realize what this no fly list is? It is a secret list that we don’t know how people are put on or how once on, how to get off and all without due process no less, which is one of the most fundamental rights we have as citizens. Now, all the Democrats seem to want to do is expand it and these people are anything but civil libertarians and the protectors of our rights.

                • OldLefty June 16th, 2016 at 13:49

Yes, we HAVE seen him hold those things up certainly better than we have with his predecessors especially those on the right.

                • Suzanne McFly June 16th, 2016 at 17:00

Not gonna waste too much time with you, I have puppy poop to pick up and I enjoy doing that a lot more than dealing with people like yourself. 1. it is President Obama, no Mr. Obama 2. you can ask bush about the “no fly list” since it was created while he was in office.

        • Ron Theison June 16th, 2016 at 11:05

Boy that Durbin can come up with the humdingers can’t he.? It’s not about hunting Mr. Dimwit Durban. Hey, how long before he’ll be agitating that we get those really high powered “sniper rifles” (a hunting rifle with a scope) off the streets? Nobody needs one of those, right?

          • OldLefty June 16th, 2016 at 11:15

            Durbin is almost correct too.

  4. Mike June 16th, 2016 at 09:07

    Murika…!!!!!
The only place on planet Earth where you can be on the terror watchlist and still buy an assault rifle …. where we are left hoping our elected officials will change the law, but know they probably won’t.

  5. Gina Bousquet June 16th, 2016 at 10:36

Senator Murphy, a honor to his Party.

  6. Ron Theison June 16th, 2016 at 10:58

And when these new regulations fail to have an impact, will the Democrats finally say that they have done all that could be done and they will not infringe of the people’s 2nd Amendment rights any more? Don’t bet on it. Once they get these new anti-gun regulations there will be more and more that will come down the pike. The ultimate goal is no guns for anyone except the police, the military, and their own private security guards.

    • oldfart June 16th, 2016 at 11:30

“And when these new regulations fail to have an impact, ”
Meaning, when yet another pis*sed off lunatic walks into a red state gun show and legally buys a semi-automatic,with zero background check or waiting period, who then goes to where ever the people who pis*ed them off are and the proceeds to take out as many as they can before they either kill themselves or the cops do it for them.
Keeping that from happening is the utimate goal.

      • Mensa Member June 16th, 2016 at 15:08

        Exactly

Will “Ron Theison” admit that no gun control is an absolute disaster?

    • Leannie June 16th, 2016 at 12:32

The ultimate goal is to save lives…not whatever drivel the NRA spouts.

    • Mensa Member June 16th, 2016 at 15:05

      >> they will not infringe of the people’s 2nd Amendment rights any more?

You don’t have a Second Amendment right to every conceivable type of weapon.

  7. Maxx44 June 16th, 2016 at 13:17

Paranoid gun freaks who cannot find another way to compensate for their 2″ d1cks think that expanded background checks and denying guns to loons and terror suspects are an infringement of their rights is beyond stupid. Hang on, Skippy, no one is going to take your steel d1ldo away from you.

Now _this_ is a good reason to shut down the government:

    Not over making healthcare affordable.
