Republican Senator: ‘Secular mindset’ is ‘directly contrary to the founding of our republic’

Posted by | June 10, 2016 16:12 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions laments that we’re a secular nation.

Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, a Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, warned in a speech to the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference today that “the courts are at risk” in the upcoming presidential election, lamenting that at least one current Supreme Court justice displays a “secular mindset.”

“You see, this is a postmodern, relativistic, secular mindset and I believe it’s directly contrary to the founding of our republic,” he said.

I am sick and tired of the Repubs.

Sick of them denying universal health care

Sick of them lying us into two wars.

Sick of them shutting down the federal government.

Sick of them destroying the credit rating of this country.

Sick of them obstructing everything Obama .

Tired of their treatment of women, minorities, gays, and everybody else that don’t look or act like them.

It is not just trump, it is the whole damn right wing.

    This country can do better.

This asshole will be Trump’s VP pick- I’d bet the farm on it. He’s the only GOP senator dumb enough to shackle himself to a sinking ship.

Give me his itinerary. I’ll be more than happy to. I’ll need some help with traveling expenses though.

The fact that this idiot is actually a Senator clearly shows how stupid the voting people of this country has gotten.

You either have a secular free republic or a theocracy, you don’t get to have both.

Jefferson Beauregard Sessions has not really studied the founding fathers and what their intentions were for this country.
He also is high on the list for Trump’s VP, as if we needed more reason to be afraid.

    • StoneyCurtisll June 10th, 2016 at 19:49

      High on the list?…
      Say it ain’t so…..

      • mistlesuede June 10th, 2016 at 20:14

That’s what has been reported. But then who knows? There is so much speculation on both sides.

          Anything is possible…
          Thats what is frightening…;)

Faith and Freedom conference? Freedom for who or freedom for a few.

  10. mfr4 June 10th, 2016 at 18:57

Actually, I don’t see. Religion is a rigid, immoveable, and intransigient mindset that holds people back from innovative, and progressive thought and deed. These are changing times and they are going to be tough enough without intolerance, ignorance and exclusion.

      >> Religion is a rigid, immoveable, and intransigient mindset that holds
people back from innovative, and progressive thought and deed.

Really? Mahatma Gandhi held people back? Sojourner Truth? Dorothy Day? Martin Luther King Jr? Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn? Jimmy Carter? Nelson Mandela? Barack Obama? They are all very religious people. You don’t think they are progressive?

If so, you may be the one with a rigid mindset.

      • whatthe46 June 11th, 2016 at 02:13

they were tolerant. today’s so-called “christians” are no where near tolerant, or caring. it’s more about money and what’s in it for them. today, there are few, and Obama is certainly one of the few that gives a damn about you and me.

      • mfr4 June 11th, 2016 at 10:54

I’m afraid I stand by my comment. The best are good because they are and religion has little to do with it. Look at the right wing Christianity infecting th US, it’s not a positive. How many of those you mention fought to shove ignorance, intolerance, and exclusion down other’s throats?

  11. StoneyCurtisll June 10th, 2016 at 19:44

    Jefferson Beauregard “Jeff” Sessions IIl…
Comes from a long line of southern slave holder/confederate traitors…

Secular government was the deliberate goal of the framers of the Constitution. Thanks, David Baryon, for disseminating unmitigated crap that the foolish Rethugs actually believe.

  14. Dwendt44 June 11th, 2016 at 00:26

This is NOT a christian country Mr Sessions. It’s a secular country like our founding fathers envisioned. We have a secular Constitution that governs it and the law of the land says explicitly that it is NOT founded on the christian religion. Sorry.

    • Mensa Member June 11th, 2016 at 01:44

I’m not sure it’s quite as simple as you say. The Pilgrims and the Puritans and the Quakers and missionaries and Episcopalians and more played a significant role in founding America.

Fine… but the Christians nationalist push the idea that they were the only founders. This is so clearly not true.

But, even school children know that the founders were highly inspired by the Greeks and the Romans. I’m no expert but I think this was a greater influence than the bible.

The founders also admired the consensus rule of Native Americans.

Sessions is a bitter little man because he didn’t make it onto to Supreme Court
