Texting scandal: Racist texts by San Francisco cop

This is the second racist texting scandal in two years at the San Francisco police department.

CNN has exclusively obtained a list of dozens of offensive texts sent to and from Officer Jason Lai. The content has not been previously disclosed. The list is not a full history of his texts.

Lai resigned from the department earlier this month, according to a police spokesman.

Don Nobles, Lai’s attorney, said the texts were “not reflective of who he is” and that “there is no evidence he carried out any of those sentiments as an officer.”

“He was well liked and well loved on his beat,” he said of the six-year-veteran.

    What a ridiculous claim!

    Non-racists don’t post a bunch of racist stuff, just because they think it’s private!

    And I seriously doubt that he kept his racism out of his job. One’s underlying beliefs tend to reveal themselves.

        High stress and very instinctual.

        A cop sometimes has to make split-second decisions. Does he/she shoot or hold back? I imagine that bigotry easily comed through in those situations.

    no surprise at all to any of us who grew up and lived in the Haight. even if you were white, you were still a “pinko faggot”. heaven help you if you weren’t. SFPD has always been a “good ol’ boy” network, at least for the 45 years I’ve known them.

    I would like to know what was in those texts. What was so horrible, that made this man quit? I can only imagine, but I am glad he is gone.

          Hey, I am just getting back with you. You are RIGHT, this subhuman, thug, is a piece of work. He has had ONGOING issues, issues that should have been investigated a 2-3 years ago. I am perturbed that he stayed on the department so long, with his aire of omnipotence.
          That is the problem with a lot of these police departments. They KNOW that have these racist working on the streets, but do nothing about it. Why? Because the fish begins stinking at the head.
