NBC/WSJ/Marist: Hillary up 14 in NY

Posted by | April 11, 2016 19:00 | Filed under: Politics

Hillary Clinton is 14 points ahead of Bernie Sanders in New York.

The poll showed support for Clinton at 55 percent, while Sanders stood at 41 percent. This is the first NBC/WSJ/Marist poll conducted in New York in this election cycle, but its results correspond closely to those of other polls, which have shown Clinton enjoying a double-digit lead with more than 50 percent support.

Both candidates claim New York as their home state – Clinton served as its senator and Sanders was born in Brooklyn. The candidates’ rhetoric has grown more personal as they have competed for its votes.

TPM’s PollTracker Average shows Clinton at 53.5 percent and Sanders at 39.2 percent.

In 2008, Clinton won the NY primary with over 57% of the vote, beating Obama by 17%. Note that the New York primary was in early February in 2008.

I only bring this up because it’s interesting. It does provide somewhat of a reference point for how the current “battle” is going, though. It leaves one with the question – is Sanders doing better in NY than Obama because of Sanders, because of Clinton, or because the primary is being held more than two months later (in which case, would Obama have been able to win the NY primary if it had been held in April?)
