Christie condemns prisoner swap

These Republican candidates criticizing the release of American prisoners are coming off like partisan hacks.

On Saturday, Republicans said that Obama should not have given up Iranian prisoners because it made the United States look weak and that the U.S. prisoners should have been released without condition.

Shortly after the exchange was announced, [Marco] Rubio said that while he was happy the Americans were coming home, the release would only encourage U.S. enemies to take more hostages abroad.

“They shouldn’t have been in jail. I just saw Jason’s brother on Tuesday night at the state of the Union. He’s never been in jail, he did nothing wrong,” Rubio told The Guardian’s Sabrina Siddiqui. “Governments are taking Americans hostage because they believe they can gain concessions from this government under Barack Obama. It’s an incentive for more people to do this in the future.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has also spoken critically of the Iran deal, similarly said that the United States should not have had to make any concessions to get the Americans released.

“We shouldn’t have to swap prisoners, these folks were taken illegally in violation of international law and they should have been released without condition,” Christie told WHOTV in Iowa. “But you know, the Iranians have treated this president with disrespect for years and he continues to take it. I would not take it as president.”

Since you will never be President, you will never have to worry about “taking it”.

The fact that these morons will not stop pandering to their far right wing base makes them ineligible to be President. If they are opposed to the release of American prisoners, they have no business in politics.

He is 100% correct, for once. They should not have been taken, and we should not have had to make a swap to get them back. But this is the real world. They were taken. So we have to deal with what is. And the president and Kerry did what they had to do. We didn’t really give up anything, only some Iranians that had been arrested for trade violations. They were not dealing in weapons, they were not terrorists, or members of ISIS. But Christie’s “solution” is to never give in, and leave these people in prison, where they never should have been. He is an idiot, and fortunately for the entire world, he will never be president. If the people of New Jersey have any sense, he will also not be governor anymore.

weren’t they in their territory? if so, i don’t really have a problem with it. if Iranians had crossed over into our territory wouldn’t we have responded the same? the thing is it was straightened out.

Jason was the Tehran correspondent for the Wash Post, accused of espionage. One was a former Marine visiting his ailing grandmother, accused of being a CIA spy. Another was a pastor building an orphanage, detained for organizing home churches. He seems to be the only one they have a legitimate beef with, however much we may disagree with it. If that’s what the law says, if that’s what he was doing he did break the law. Not much is known about the fourth one.

Well, it’s a way better deal than the last president made with the Iranians for hostages…Reagan gave us Iran/Contra and should have been impeached.

And Carter was the one who made the deal to get the hostages back, but Reagan got the credit for it.

Man, it is going to be nuts watching what these “candidates” would do if one ever got into power!

    • Kick Frenzy January 17th, 2016 at 14:06

Agreed… if, by “nuts”, you mean “terrifying”.

Of course, is there any other way for these clowns?

    (Needs small correction.)
