Right-wingers blast return of American prisoners

Posted by | January 16, 2016 17:06 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

If President Obama cured cancer they’d say he did it wrong. And what took him so long, anyway?

Florida Senator Marco Rubio immediately criticized the latest deal by saying the U.S. should never engage in prisoner “swaps.”

“If these reports are true, of course we’re happy for them and their families, but they should have never been there,” Rubio said. “The fact of the matter is that this tells us everything we need to know about the Iranian regime—that they take people hostage in order to gain concessions. And the fact that they can get away with it with this administration I think has created an incentive for more governments to do this around the world.”

Front-running GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump’s response to the deal was “meh,” and “doesn’t sound too good.”

“I have to see what the deal is for the four people, because somebody said they’re getting seven people back,” Trump said in Portsmouth, N.H.  where he is campaigning. “So essentially they get 150 billion plus seven, and we get four. Meh, doesn’t sound too good. Doesn’t sound too good.”

Although Rezaian was taken into custody in July of 2014, Trump added, “This should have been three, four years ago when the deal was struck.”

Texas Senator Ted Cruz took time out from battling Trump on Twitter to thank God for the release of the hostages — while also throwing cold water on it.

He tweeted: “Praise God! Surely bad parts of Obama’s latest deal, but prayers of thanksgiving that Pastor Saeed is coming home.”

Praise God???? Isn’t that the same as saying “Allah Akbar”???…

    • Larry Schmitt January 16th, 2016 at 17:13

Exactly, just a different flavor of magic sky fairy.

      • Mensa Member January 16th, 2016 at 17:15

I thank God for good things.

But, I also thank Obama and Kerry for this one. They got this done.

    • bpollen January 16th, 2016 at 17:22

It’s actually Allahu Akbar, but yeah… the differences are meaningless.

      • Mensa Member January 16th, 2016 at 17:32

        >> yeah… the differences are meaningless.

They don’t mean the same thing, literally. Maybe one could argue that they effectively mean the same thing.

        • bpollen January 16th, 2016 at 17:52

Allahu Akbar = God is the greatest. That is praising god

Praise God= Praise God. That is praising god.

That’s why I said the differences are meaningless. I never said they were literally identical. If you remember, I said that there were differences, and that they were meaningless.

I guess I don’t understand the nitpicking to imply that “differences are meaningless” is the same as “literally.” Maybe one could argue that, but it would be wrong.

  2. Larry Schmitt January 16th, 2016 at 17:14

“…this tells us everything we need to know about the Iranian regime—that they take people hostage in order to gain concessions.”
We already knew that about Iran. We weren’t trying to change them, just trying to get the Americans back. And we did. So STFU. (I’d love to tell him that in person.)

    • tracey marie January 16th, 2016 at 17:48

actually, the xtian theocrats knew by preaching the bible and distributing bibles is illegal in Iran, they broke the law and paid the consequences.

  3. allison1050 January 16th, 2016 at 17:17

They will always throw shade at this president..it’s a given and most of us hopefully recognize that.

  4. Larry Schmitt January 16th, 2016 at 17:21

Hey, tRump, that $150b is their money, that was being held under the sanctions. It has nothing to do with the release of the Americans. And it’s $50b, not 150. Idiot.

  5. Red Eye Robot January 16th, 2016 at 17:21

Obama got 4 Americans for 7 Iranians but it took 5 high level Taliban terrorists for one army deserter?

    • Larry Schmitt January 16th, 2016 at 17:22

So you would rather have all of them still being held in Iran?

    • bpollen January 16th, 2016 at 17:23

Wow… you wanna send them back because it wasn’t a good enough deal?

      What a POS…

      • Larry Schmitt January 16th, 2016 at 17:23

        I beat ya to it.

        • bpollen January 16th, 2016 at 17:24

I type too slow… fat fingers.

    • Foundryman January 16th, 2016 at 17:24

Only far right wackjobs would be against freeing American prisoners.

    • nola878 January 16th, 2016 at 17:25

If it were your loved ones being held, you’d be singing a different tune.

      • bpollen January 16th, 2016 at 17:25

You are assuming human emotions, but none are in evidence with Pinkie.

no…not this one…he wouldn’t care if it was his mother

    • Mensa Member January 16th, 2016 at 17:26

Obama got an American POW released and you conservatives spit on him.

    • Mensa Member January 16th, 2016 at 17:30

      >> Obama got 4 Americans for 7 Iranians

Did I miss this part of the story? Which seven Iranians were released?

    • whatthe46 January 16th, 2016 at 17:38

      which 7?

      • Mensa Member January 16th, 2016 at 18:18

        My question too.

        Seven Iranians were traded? Who?

        • Larry Schmitt January 16th, 2016 at 18:40

From the Wash Post: “…Iran released Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian and three other detained Iranian Americans on Saturday in exchange for the freedom of seven people imprisoned or charged in the United States…”
The fifth one was released separately.

        • LoisB January 16th, 2016 at 18:43

I just heard the White House is not releasing the names of the seven we’re holding until the Americans are on a plane and out of Iranian air space.

    • tracey marie January 16th, 2016 at 17:48

      5 Americans and so what.

    • arc99 January 16th, 2016 at 18:48

Right wing hero Benjamin Netanyahu exchanged 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for a single Israeli soldier.

      go f*ck yourself…

      http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/17/world/meast/israel-prisoner-swap-explainer/

Israel is freeing more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including hundreds serving life sentences for attacks on Israelis, in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit who was captured by Hamas in 2006. How and why has the controversial deal come about?

It doesn’t hang with him…it jiggles.

    • Hirightnow January 17th, 2016 at 03:14

Would you rather he gave thousands of American lives to free them?

    • OldLefty January 17th, 2016 at 08:17

Yes. That’s what grown up Americans do.
Should Obama have given them weapons like Reagan did?

  6. nola878 January 16th, 2016 at 17:23

“If President Obama cured cancer they’d say he did it wrong.”

They’d say he did it to put oncologists and pharmaceutical companies out of business.

    • Larry Schmitt January 16th, 2016 at 17:24

Or to honor a promise he made to campaign donors.

so, in other words, they should have rot there. and says a lot about the GOPissers.

  8. Foundryman January 16th, 2016 at 17:47

Their reaction goes to show just how much they want Obama to fail at everything, no matter the harm it would do, no matter who or how many gets hurt, they still adhere to their oath they made in 2009 to oppose everything Obama wants to do.

    • Larry Schmitt January 16th, 2016 at 18:42

They still haven’t given him credit for bin Laden.

    • Carolina Gonzalez January 17th, 2016 at 00:57

      Absolutely true. Remember this?

      • whatthe46 January 17th, 2016 at 01:03

but, they will say it was taken out of context.

Especially when you get right-wingers as your opponent.

  10. Mensa Member January 16th, 2016 at 18:17

If he only had a heart.

  11. LoisB January 16th, 2016 at 18:40

I am sure the families of those returning Americans feel the same as you jackasses. Perhaps the freed Americans will opt to stay in prison in Iran until one of you is elected President. Surely they would rather stay there and be released under your watch instead of the Black guy’s.

    • Carolina Gonzalez January 17th, 2016 at 00:55

      Well said Lois, well said.

  12. labman57 January 16th, 2016 at 19:04

Republicans politicos and conservative pundits are fond of criticizing the Obama Administration’s foreign policy for being “too diplomatic” and for not touting America’s “exceptionalism” and reminding all other nations of their inherent inferiority on a daily basis.

Perhaps these pompous, self-righteous politicos don’t really know what diplomacy means:
1 : the art and practice of conducting negotiations between nations
2 : skill in handling affairs without arousing hostility : tact

Threatening to invade or bomb a sovereign foreign power is NOT diplomacy, despite what these right wing war-mongers believe.

  13. mea_mark January 16th, 2016 at 20:03

From what I have heard the Seven Iranians are being released. So far I haven’t heard anything about them wanting to go back to Iran or that they have to. It will be interesting to see what they decide to do.

    • JoseM4 January 17th, 2016 at 04:05

I’d be interested to learn more about these seven Iranians. I find it interesting so few details are available but with time all will be known.

  14. Bunya January 16th, 2016 at 23:49

I was going to suggest Obama trade Marco Rubio for the prisoners, but that would surely start WWIII. Iran would never stand for the U.S. dumping our garbage on them, calling it “cruel and unusual punishment”.

  15. rg9rts January 17th, 2016 at 00:01

    These people are nuts

    • whatthe46 January 17th, 2016 at 00:51

you have to have some serious hate in what you call a soul to have rather they remain as prisoners, than be thankful that this administration was able to get these men and woman home without starting a damn unnecessary fricken war. and the hate they have for Obama is jealousy! one of the worse kinds of hate.

      • JoseM4 January 17th, 2016 at 03:59

That’s a false choice: cave into Iran or start a war.

Of course reasonable people want the prisoners home but what’s wrong with questioning the price we paid to get them home?

Until we get answers to those questions, I’ll withhold judgment.

        • OldLefty January 17th, 2016 at 08:16

          There are no unanswered questions.
And it’s not caving into Iran.
Basically, the seven Iranians did what Cheney did; violated sanctions against countries he wanted to do business with.

          • JoseM4 January 17th, 2016 at 08:56

Oh well if you can compare it to Cheney then its just fine.

            • OldLefty January 17th, 2016 at 09:19

No, it just points out the double standards.

              • JoseM4 January 17th, 2016 at 09:59

EVERY country spies and arrests spies from other country.
If that’s the double standard you’re referring to then I agree with you.

                • OldLefty January 17th, 2016 at 10:19

No. I am referring to the fact that Cheney did business with nations with whom we had sanctions, but he would never have been arrested for it.
The same applies to many US businesses who have done business with Iran.

        • whatthe46 January 17th, 2016 at 13:43

Iran Contra – (under Reagan) Part of the deal was that, in July 1985, the United States would send 508 American-made TOW anti-tank missiles from Israel to Iran for the safe exchange of a hostage, the Reverend Benjamin Weir.

Obama didn’t supply weapons for our 10 citizens.

      • rg9rts January 17th, 2016 at 04:26

they are stuck in this hate mode…don’t they realize how stupid they are?? I know they don’t …will annoy you later LOL .

  16. JoseM4 January 17th, 2016 at 03:55

“I have to see what the deal is”
Seems like a reasonable position. Without knowing the details of the deal, only a partisan would attack (or defend) the deal.

    • OldLefty January 17th, 2016 at 08:14

We know the details of the deal. (Probably Trump doesn’t).

And $150 B is their money. That was decided when the JCPOA was finalized.

  17. jybarz January 17th, 2016 at 07:47

Republican A$$HOLES can never be satisfied.
The only thing they will be over the moon satisfied is if President Obama fails.
Unfortunately for these A$$HOLES, the president has both the winning short and long games perfected.
    Republicans are very sore losers.
The more these ba$tard$ are unhappy, the more the sane and true patriotic people are so happy.

  18. tr60 January 17th, 2016 at 15:38

Obama could give them eternal life in Paradise (and he can, even they call him “The Messiah.) and they would bitch that they didn’t get the 72 virgins. Once he delivered on that they would bitch about having to share eternity with all those women.
