Hardline Republicans Hit Ryan For Mentioning ‘Family Time’

Posted by | October 21, 2015 16:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics

The fine people in the party of family values want Paul Ryan to know that family time is not in his potential job description.

It’s not necessarily directed as a criticism — just a reality of the job, Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, told reporters Wednesday morning.

“You can’t do the job 9 to 5, Monday through Friday,” he said. “That’s not a criticism. The speaker has to work on weekends. I’m not running for speaker. I’ve got young kids at home and there’s plenty of jobs I’m unable to do. But the time commitment isn’t 40 hours a week. And I think that’s going to be part of the discussion.”

Huelskamp went so far as to almost praise Speaker John Boehner, who is stepping down at the end of month. The Kansas Republican is among the group of conservatives credited with Boehner’s resignation.

“Speaker John Boehner raised $50 million,” he said. “The speaker has to work more than 40 hours a week.”

Other conservatives including Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks said one of the things the Freedom Caucus will have to “ascertain is whether or not (Ryan) has time to do the job.”

Sounds like Paul Ryan isn’t going to take/get the job. Next week’s chaos in the GOP is going to be interesting to say the least.

Huelskamp? Seriously, Huelskamp spends no time with his children – he literally spends the weekends in Kansas stumping for the next election unless he’ attending a protest at a PP or women’s medical clinic. Congress won’t even let Huelskamp participate on committees. I’m honestly surprised he remembers to walk upright.

That’s probably best for his kids.

If Ryan isn’t willing to ‘burn the Saint’, I don’t see him being initiated into that exalted position.

Well, it looks like Paul isn’t going to get the total commitment that he wants….

  5. rg9rts October 21st, 2015 at 17:20

ROTFLMAO…….WHEN have any of these idiots in congress worked a 40 hr Mon-Fri 9-5 week??????????????????????????How about working 50 weeks a year like most of the rest of us…

    • Larry Schmitt October 21st, 2015 at 17:21

They’re lucky if they work 50 HOURS a year. Their staffs, on the other hand…

    • mistlesuede October 21st, 2015 at 17:26

Exactly. They use that old phrase “they are back home in their districts talking with constituents” to explain what amounts to months of vacation, not to mention their 3-4 day workweek every week.

      • allison1050 October 21st, 2015 at 17:40

Its 3 days actually and most of that is spent on the phone raising campaign money so it’s safe to say that they aren’t even working 3 days.

        • mistlesuede October 21st, 2015 at 17:45

I would agree with that. When you watch the chamber on C-Span, unless there is a vote, the members who are speaking are usually speaking to five people from their own party sitting there with them. Some of them are spending their time in useless hearings, but the fundraising is the largest share of their time. It’s disgusting.

          • Larry Schmitt October 21st, 2015 at 17:46

And the ones who are there are probably checking their emails on their phones.

          • allison1050 October 21st, 2015 at 17:55

            It’s disgusting but true.

        • Larry Schmitt October 21st, 2015 at 17:46

That’s the basic problem with House members. The term is only 2 years, so most of their time is either spent campaigning or fundraising. Very little legislating is going on. National Doughnut Day and naming Post Offices don’t count.

          • allison1050 October 21st, 2015 at 17:55

Nat’l. Doughnut Day and renaming Post Offices do count in their book.

          • mistlesuede October 21st, 2015 at 17:58

That was the depth of Kevin McCarthy’s experience. Not kidding.

          • ChaCubed October 23rd, 2015 at 03:42

            :-)) But RENAMING is important.

  6. Robert Kennedy October 21st, 2015 at 18:41

Pelosi did, but she isn’t either a man or a Republican. Funny thing, Ryan wanting family leave time after voting against it for new parents numerous times. But his family suckled at the government teat for their entire lives with government contracts and SS survivor payments and now he wants those cut off for others. Ryan is the worst kind of scumbag on Earth.

  7. maggie October 21st, 2015 at 19:16

Ryan a con in the republican party WHINING about family leave? what’s next will republicans be voting for a national family leave act for both (all child guardians of whatever stripe) parents? Like that communist country Sweden?!? ;)

  8. Suzanne McFly October 21st, 2015 at 20:04

Ha, like any of the Senators have worked 40 hours a week in the past few years. I love how all the sudden he supports spending time with his family when it comes to himself, his votes show he does not support family leave, sooo…….

  9. robert October 21st, 2015 at 20:10

So Paul Ryan (R) wants more family time? Well, on Jan 20,2009 Paul Ryan (R) attended a secret meeting at the restaurant “The Caucus Room” with his other ALL MALE (only White) republicans with no women republicans to take a oath/pledge to Obstruct, Sabotage, Block and Filibuster any legislation to make the US Economy recover, regardless of the damage to the American people and America. These republicans, which included Paul Ryan (R) even called themselves the Republican Taliban and repeated by Pete Sessions (R) TX and confirmed by Newt Gingrich on Thom Hartmann Show, to discredit any accomplishments by the First African American President on his and America’s Inauguration Day of Jan 20, 2009 which was watched by a majority of real American Families. This is not the only time Paul Ryan (R) turned his back on Americans when Americans needed the HELP! Paul Ryan (R) voted AGAINST the Hurricane Sandy Relief Bill, when 131 AMERICANS were KILLED and THOUSANDS lost their homes/livelihoods to this American Disaster! So instead of a new republican speaker replacing McCarthy (R) who also attended this meeting, the American people get the same old, same old republican who also committed “Sedition” and should be considered a Traitor to our country by his actions. Just remember that this same Paul Ryan (R) was voted by his class as the “BIGGEST BROWN NOSER” and now he claims he wants to spend more time with his family, but he did not want to spend time with them on Jan 20,2009, and America’s Most Historic Day!

    Then there is prayer time.

  14. Budda October 22nd, 2015 at 08:47

I guess if somebody/person/employer was begging me to take a job I would ask for all the perks I could get. Don’t blame Ryan for requesting these. I still think he’s a hypocritical,anti-middle class pompous ass though.

  15. illinoisboy1977 October 22nd, 2015 at 10:09

Sorry, but if you’re third in the line of succession, you don’t get to demand “family time”. If you can’t fulfill the requirements of the job, don’t apply for it. It’s not a hard concept to grasp.
