Catholic Congressman Vows To Boycott Pope’s Speech

Posted by | September 18, 2015 12:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Religion

So, you’re not going to sit and listen to the Pope making a rare appearance at your place of business because you disagree with him on an issue that is talked about in the Bible. Nice.

“It is difficult to convey the excitement I first felt when it was revealed that His Holiness Pope Francis was invited to Washington D.C. to address the world from the floor of the House of Representatives,” Congressman Paul Gosar writes in an op-ed for Townhall. “Many believed, like I did, that this was an opportunity for the Pope to be one of the world’s great religious advocates and address the current intolerance of religious freedom.”

Instead, Gosar writes, reports indicate that Pope Francis will focus much of his speech on “a climate that has been changing since first created in Genesis. More troubling is the fact that this climate change talk has adopted all of the socialist talking points, wrapped false science and ideology into ‘climate justice’ and is being presented to guilt people into leftist policies.”

“I have both a moral obligation and leadership responsibility to call out leaders, regardless of their titles, who ignore Christian persecution and fail to embrace opportunities to advocate for religious freedom and the sanctity of human life,” Gosar concludes. “If the Pope plans to spend the majority of his time advocating for flawed climate change policies, then I will not attend.”

So, all Gosar wants to hear about is how Christians are persecuted, but not about the planet, the environment, and other issues that Pope Francis is passionate about.

1 less idiot to take up room when the Pope address’s the House.

    • Chris September 18th, 2015 at 17:54

Hey, hey! Re him being a dentist- I resemble that remark.

(I forgive you as Pope Francis would want me to…)

Seriously, I have been supremely embarrassed that this nutball shares a profession with me. Shows dentistry is indeed a big tent.

      • allison1050 September 18th, 2015 at 18:00

I’d be afraid to get into his chair!

        • cogitoergodavesum September 19th, 2015 at 12:18

          Pray the cavities away!

The Pope has made forceful statements about persecution, including persecuted christians in the Middle East and elsewhere (just not in the US) so this pathetic little piss-ant congresscritter is going to hold his breath until the Pope says what Paul Gosar wants him to say when he wants him to say it. Talk about your cafeteria catholics. This guy is the poster child.

Unsurprising. Within months of beginning his papacy I knew that it wouldn’t take long for the right-wing nut-cases to come out with: THE POPE’S A RED, etc. Limbaugh was the first. Of course Gosar can do what he wants…like all the right-wing nut-cases he has no interest in hearing, reading or speaking with anything or anyone with whom he disagrees. Candor compels me to state,’tho, there are a goodly number of leftwing nut-cases, some who comment on this website, who are the same way. Candor compels me to compliment Liberty University (a make-believe university in my opinion) for inviting and being quite courteous to Sen. Sanders. I don’t like complimenting Liberty but they deserve it in this case.

Liberty U has a dinosaur fossil display labeled “4000 years old”.

This is all you need to know about LU.

Liberty and religion both march in different directions.

      • Larry Schmitt September 18th, 2015 at 14:27

They think The Flintstones is a documentary.

      • Elliot J. Stamler September 18th, 2015 at 20:04

Wrong. You smear religion. You think Liberty represents “religion.” It doesn’t. It no more represents religion than ISIS or the Inquisition of past centuries. In fact it is a perfect example of the misuse of religion and abuse of God’s name by bad and evil men which has gone on forever. There is nothing in my religion or my personal faith that makes me in the slightest degree sympathetic to Liberty and what it and its boss, Falwell, Jr., preach. Every mainstream religion rejects creationism emphatically-that Liberty endorses it does make them religious..it just describes them as fundamentalist and fanatical fools.

        • anothertoothpick September 18th, 2015 at 22:11

Religion is totalatarism. Do what the bible says…or else.

That is the oppisite of liberty, no?

          • bpollen September 19th, 2015 at 06:32

But not all christians feel that way. The loudest and most obnoxious and self-righteous get all the airplay. And are the people who cured me of religion (“It gets better!”)

          • Elliot J. Stamler September 19th, 2015 at 15:29

No! And anyone who thinks that religion=totalitarianism is an imbecile and an atheistic fanatic. I don’t smear atheism but you cannot resist publicly smearing religion.

            • anothertoothpick September 19th, 2015 at 20:27

It is so easy to piss you clowns off.

All you have to do is tell them the truth and sit back and watch their heads go POP POP POP.

              Thanks…… you made my day.

        • anothertoothpick September 20th, 2015 at 10:42

If you think that post is a “smear” you have perfected the victim card.

    • Roctuna September 18th, 2015 at 18:32

I believe Sen. Sanders approached them. Kudos to both for speaking and listening. If Bernie made his point about common ground with even a few of the students, he accomplished a lot.

  4. The Original Just Me September 18th, 2015 at 12:27

Do Ya think anybody will notice that he’s not there ?

    • Roctuna September 18th, 2015 at 13:24

Only his Mom, who should scold him for not listening.

      • The Original Just Me September 18th, 2015 at 22:05

His Mom should Whack him up alongside his head with a frying pan.

    • bpollen September 19th, 2015 at 06:26

Well, no one told me about him
      The way he lied
Well, no one told me about him
      How many people cried

But it’s too late to say he’s sorry
How would I know, why should I care?
Please don’t bother trying to find him
      He’s not there!

      (Apologies to Rod Argent)

  5. Gindy51 September 18th, 2015 at 12:30

Just trying to get his 15 minutes of fame and you gave it to him. Who cares what this booger is doing?

  6. jybarz September 18th, 2015 at 12:33

Another dumb rightwing Christian GOP who can’t handle the truth.
Because their truth is truly unchristian.
Pretend-Christians that’s what these lousy fckrs are.

  7. William September 18th, 2015 at 12:45

    From his bio.

“He was endorsed by Sarah Palin and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.”
What else does one need to know?
It’s interesting that the right wants the Pope to stay out of matters of science such a global climate change, yet they seem to have no problem using the Bible in science classes.

    • Roctuna September 18th, 2015 at 13:23

I don’t know Allen Clifton but I hope he doesn’t mind if I use that quote on my gmail signature. That’s great.

    • Elliot J. Stamler September 19th, 2015 at 21:52

Years ago on a 60 Minutes segment, the reporter asked the official Vatican Astronomer (they have an observatory there) about the relationship of the Bible and science, and the priest replied (he had a Ph.D. in Astronomy) that the church and all sensible religious people do not look at the Bible as a science textbook. That says it all. Except for the majority of the Southern Baptists and Assemblies of God folks who continue to be the trumpeters of ignorance over scientific truth and mask their ignorance in the guise of piety.

      • William September 20th, 2015 at 09:23

I’m one of those people who believe the Bible and science often come together…eventually.

“There is nothing new under the sun”

A very good way to describe matter, which cannot be created or destroyed, only changed.
“The dead know nothing” simple and accurate.
I know a physicist who is also religious. He thinks he has a grasp on the concept of God.

He explains that we have no idea where over 70 percent of the origins https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/001fc9593555167b89db2bfdad86696b2fc03b22d792f0c853ea3e610ff5316e.jpg of the universes energy (dark energy).
The fundamental difference I suppose in one can have faith and still search for answers. Our quest for the truth is likely the best part of human nature.
Or as you accurately point out. Some people don’t care about answers truth or science. Their answer to any science is
        “Cuz Jesus”.

  8. Laura911 September 18th, 2015 at 12:50

I DISSED THE POPE AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY TSHIRT.

  9. rg9rts September 18th, 2015 at 13:08

    Another gopee imbecile….

  10. Mike September 18th, 2015 at 13:42

Hmmm…The Holy See is infallible it’s the very cornerstone of Catholic dogma: that of petrine supremacy of the pope. In this instance, where the Pope has already issued a Papal Encyclical, to disagree with His Holiness is grounds for excommunication.
Not much of a Catholic, so he won’t be missed.

  11. Robert Kennedy September 18th, 2015 at 13:50

    Excommunicate the asshat.

    • bpollen September 19th, 2015 at 06:21

Exactly. Popes have gone so far as to dig up people’s bodies and burned them… to death again. In comparison, ex-communication would almost be a mitzvah (heh.)

  12. Bunya September 18th, 2015 at 13:52

Given the huge turnout that’s expected upon his visit, I’m sure the Pope won’t lose any sleep worrying about why an insignificant bottom feeder Gosar didn’t show up.

  13. Larry Schmitt September 18th, 2015 at 14:27

He’s a Catholic and still believes in Genesis? Time to get into the current century. And there are no Christians being persecuted in this country. I’m sure the Pope won’t even notice he’s not there.

  14. tracey marie September 18th, 2015 at 16:08

he was happy to listen to netenyahooo

  15. JimmyPete September 18th, 2015 at 16:45

Why shouldn’t he be absent, the GOP Congress has been absent for the last 7 years.

  16. Chris September 18th, 2015 at 17:50

So now it’s open war on the Pope from within Catholicism. I thought this would happen when Fox News and Limbaugh felt unfettered from savaging him. And when Pope Francis started quoting Scripture to his flock about caring for the poor and the planet.

Francis realizes that American capitalists revere Mammon over God, regardless of what the Bible says about the matter. Sure hope the Pope has bodyguards. And I’m not even Catholic.

    • Wee Mousie September 18th, 2015 at 21:34

      Anti-Catholic, anti-Christian, anti-religious, anti-humanist, hard fisted, soft-headed, loud-mouthed capitalists.

  17. amersham46 September 18th, 2015 at 19:59

Well it has been confirmed Arizona has elected a baboon to the House of Representatives

  18. labman57 September 18th, 2015 at 22:43

More rude, immature behavior from a tea-chugging GOP legislator who disagrees with some of the views of a visiting dignitary, so he opts to gather up his marbles and scurry home to hide under the bed.

  19. Elliot J. Stamler September 19th, 2015 at 21:48

Of course I did; and you proved my point about being a smear artist. It is impossible for you to declare your atheism in a polite and reasonable way–you must defame religion and the 90% of people who like me are believers. Then you atheists wonder why you are so intensely disliked? For the record, I called YOU a fanatic and an imbecile…I do not declare all atheists to be such.

  20. Elliot J. Stamler September 19th, 2015 at 21:53

The pope is a brilliant man and Congressman Gosar is an idiot so he will not be missed.
