Walmart To Pay For Wage Increase With Cut In Workers’ Hours

When Walmart–which just happens to be the largest single employer in the United States–announced a few months ago that it would be raising the wages of some workers, it was indeed big, and unexpected news.

The increase will mean the minimum hourly wage paid to new employees will be $9 an hour, with an increase to $10 an hour in April of 2016. Walmart has estimated that the salary increases will cost the company over a billion dollars a year.

But now we discover exactly how Walmart plans to pay for the increased pay for its workers: A spokesperson told Bloomberg that the company has instructed managers to cut hours only when staff has been “overscheduled.”….READ MORE at LiberalAmerica

Working poor lives don’t count ,,, it is all about the bottom line

    • Robert Smithson September 1st, 2015 at 22:45

Maybe some of those working poor should better themselves. You know, work hard for a few years, get some more education perhaps, and then quit the crappy job you have for a better one.

You think there are enough good jobs for everyone in this country with people hiring illegals and outsourcing job to save a few bucks!

        • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 04:51

          Aaaahhh outsourcing …a Mittwitt specialty

          • bahlers September 2nd, 2015 at 06:37

Yes, Mitt and others like him did a great job of turning failing companies around and allowing them the possibility to thrive again. As a result, some lost their jobs. I know, it’s sad that Joe Schmo lost his job and now that same job can be done by someone in Mexico or Canada (for many of the manufacturing jobs) or China (for just about anything else), but Little Johnny and many others were able to keep their job, instead of everyone (aside from the CEO and a few others who always have a way out) losing their job and the company tanking.

              Can I have a hit??:?:

Republicans have greased the wheels so millions of good paying jobs are transferred to sweatshops in Asia. In many small and medium sized cities, there are no ‘better jobs’ for most people.

        • bahlers September 2nd, 2015 at 06:34

How exactly is this the GOP’s fault? In the late 60s and into the 70s Dems touted the need to pass climate change laws to avoid the coming ice age in 2000 and whatever other malarky they could think of. As a result of the crushing sanctions, and big business’s requirement to make money (so as to not fail) they did what was necessary, keep labor costs to a minimum. So what happened? Jobs were shipped overseas and many of the skills once needed to be performed by a worker could then be done by a machine (rise of technology). Combine all of that with the most restrictive corporate tax structure in the world and you have a culmination of events that lead to the middle class being left in the dust. Big business is not in the business of losing money.

      • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 04:50

Why don’t you hire a few of those poor and give them a living wage??

      • bpollen September 2nd, 2015 at 05:31

You don’t think poor people work hard? Obviously, you have never known a poor person. If you had, you would know that only stupid people think like you.

      • Gindy51 September 2nd, 2015 at 06:42

You’ve never been poor now a days, have you?

  2. Obewon September 1st, 2015 at 21:06

Wal*Mart keeps losing 4% annually on falling sales :) USA’s wealthiest Walton family mooch off taxpayers subsidizing their underpaid workers with Medicare, Welfare & SNAP public benefit handouts as part of their just hired ’employment package.’

  3. Robert Smithson September 1st, 2015 at 22:47

Just imagine what that $15.00 burger job requirement will do. That’s right folks, here comes robo burger and it’ll be bye, bye, to the $15.00 per hour human burger flipper.

    • Dwendt44 September 2nd, 2015 at 01:49

Dream on. If and when making a hamburger gets mechanized, the pay scale won’t matter one bit. As it is, the hamburger part is already largely mechanized. The labor comes in assembling them. The lie you perpetrate is just some nonsense that a right wing, corporate paid, so-called economist made up.

Thats just Bob the Boob …our resident RWNJ

    • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 04:47

They always operate on screwing the peon …If you are so smart then you realize that the reason there are so few full time employees is that they might have to give benefits…YOU ever work a split shift as a part timer???

    • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 04:49

Don’t forget the benefits YOU pay for Bob….SNAP and medicaid

  4. Tommie September 1st, 2015 at 22:55

Just pure greed, these companies are raking in millions and billions and they do not want to pay people a decent living wage without cutting their hours, these people will just turn around and give you their money! I guess those mansions will not buy themselves!

    • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 04:45

Remember the hunger bins for fellow employees last thanksgiving???

      • Tommie September 2nd, 2015 at 05:28

I do, i couldn’t believe that crap having a food drive for the workers at Wal-Mart! If that is the example you are referring to!

        • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 06:23

Thats the one…that is how well they pay their workers… SNAP and medicaid are their benefits too

  5. Dwendt44 September 2nd, 2015 at 01:55

Not sure what ‘overscheduled’ means but I”m guessing that employees shouldn’t be anywhere near 40 hours to avoid overtime. As it is, few full time employees are being hired anyway. Those that do get close to 40 hours have been there for years.

    • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 04:44

      36 for full time

    • bahlers September 2nd, 2015 at 07:04

Over-scheduled usually means scheduled for 40+ hrs a week, so over time must be paid.

  6. rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 04:43

ROTFLMAO That is exactly what I said would happen… and people said I was a liar….I am laughing last

    • bahlers September 2nd, 2015 at 06:27

This is what happens when you try to artificially raise the wages of workers.

      • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 06:50

BS its called the retail bottom line…sounds like you have a lot of experience in retail ….like SNAP and medicaid are benefits and hours will ALWAYS be under 35…Wharton Grad??

        • bahlers September 2nd, 2015 at 07:03

Every business is in existence due to the bottom line. Walmart’s bottom line really isn’t that high, one of the lowest considering how large it is. That’s the payoff of selling products at a reduced price. And SNAP and other social welfare programs are indeed income for certain subsets of the population, and as a result many in SF and Seattle are asking for their hours to be reduced so they don’t lose said benefits. Go figure. And I’m not sure what you mean by “Wharton Grad”.

          • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 07:10

Spare me the conservative BS..the ONLY time business EVER did anything for the workers is when forced to by law or shamed into it.

They are still crying that the $1.25 minimum wage will destroy business…look up triangle shirtwaist company for another fine example of american business at its finest…hey you want child labor back too 7 year olds in the factory..conservative slime

            • bahlers September 2nd, 2015 at 07:27

How is anything what I said bs? I am agreeing with you on that. Business’s primary goal is to make money, not be in the market to have their interests at heart. The very laws that you cite at the beginning prevent any 7 year old from working. And stooping down to name calling is exactly what liberals accuse conservatives of doing, right? So in general it’s best to refrain from doing so. We have differing opinions on some things, that’s not a bad thing. If we all have the same thought process, then no one is really thinking, right?

              • rg9rts September 2nd, 2015 at 07:28

You deny what I said Conazi

                • Vincent Braun September 2nd, 2015 at 16:29

A business, regardless of size, has one actual purpose…to make money. Sure you can say people do it because they love the work, want to help employ the community…etc. However the one actual purpose is profit…everything else is subject to that purpose.

                  • rg9rts September 3rd, 2015 at 04:17

You deny what I said conazi…are you deaf or ashame3d of the record of business and how it treats employees??? If business was sooooooooo benevolent there would be no need to have laws to force it to treat employees decently…want an example….just look at how they treat illegals…pay and treat them like other workers??Or screw them everywhich way to sunday for PROFIT…you know the answer so don’t lie.conazi

How many extra employees should Walmart have to keep on staff above what is needed to run a store? If Walmart has decided that fewer employees can be working at any given time and still efficiently run their stores should they be free to reduce staff? Seems to me the Walmart could have just as easily cut the hours without raising the pay.

  8. crc3 September 2nd, 2015 at 12:12

Walmart continues to prove what a bunch of scumbags they are. The billions of dollars the Walton family has continues to grow daily (with interest) and then they suppress their workers pay by cutting their hours. What benefit is there for the employees who make $10 per hour with cut hours? None.

    • Jimmy Fleck September 2nd, 2015 at 12:24

“What benefit is there for the employees who make $10 per hour with cut hours? None.” – Actually they have more free time. They could have had their hours cut with no extra pay.

    • Vincent Braun September 2nd, 2015 at 16:27

Last checked no one HAS to work at Walmart.

Get yourself an education and get a job that pays well. It’s a simple theory that happens to work time and time again.

      • crc3 September 3rd, 2015 at 12:39

I have a job but I also believe in EMPLOYEE rights. I also have a bachelor’s degree if that’s any of your business. BTW…you are one nasty MF!!
