Just what Ferguson need: armed white militiamen with guns.
An Oath Keeper, who gave his name only as “John,” told Reuters that the armed men were there to protect a journalist from Infowars.com, a conspiracy website that has often attacked the “Black Lives Matter” movement.
The Oath Keepers were armed with assault rifles and sidearms; they wore camouflage and bulletproof vests.
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said they were “both unnecessary and inflammatory” in Ferguson, notes NBC News.
Some Ferguson protesters asked the Oath Keepers why they were allowed to carry their weapons in public. One Oath Keeper said, “Open carry is open carry.”

I don’t know much about Oath Keepers, but if they remain peaceful it’s probably best to ignore them. On the ground from what I saw on live stream last night, the “protest” has devolved into a stand-off with the riot cops ready to strike at any moment. It’s a wonder there has not been more police violence. Maybe becuase there has been some, not enough, progress over the last year in Ferguson? This was in the Nation today:

Not sure how it’s going in Ferguson tonight, however I haven’t seen any reports of police using “tear gas.” Last night I saw a few smoke bombs landing behind a slowly retreating line of people, lots of police intimidation, citizen indignation, yet thankfully no injuries. Compared to this time last year the cops are acting with restraint.

However I have no way of knowing how pervasive it is right now in Ferguson… do you have a basis for your claim? “Looking intimidating” is subjective and as far as I know not illegal.

It exacerbates an already complicated and incredibly tense situation. I hate to break it to them, they are not law enforcement for this situation, in this area. They can sign up for reserve duty and work under the supervision of those responsible. The Oathkeepers at both the Bundy ranch as well as the Mining camp in Oregon have done nothing except draw weapons on Federal officials and worsen the situation at hand.
As for the arrests of protesters, you only need look at the news. Yesterday two young ladies were arrested for standing on the sidewalk outside the police station while waiting for the release of previous arrestees. They committed no offense and were given no reason. It’s all on video, and this is only one of dozens of similar stories. Yet the police thought nothing of driving off, leaving the armed Oathkeepers standing in the streets and leaving the area.

I agree these guys are not helping… it also appears they represent an organization or movement or militia or whatever… that is less than inclusive, maybe with extremist elements in its ranks, around its periphery or perhaps like faux BLM, hijacking the name for their own purposes. I don’t know.
I have recently learned there are supposedly dozens of likewise affiliated folks – mostly retired cops and military – who are walking around “patrolling” sans guns. I assume they are acting as spotters for the cops, identifying individuals they see who they believe represent a threat of violence!? So far though, I don’t think they have interfered with any peaceful protesters.
Like you, I suspect the whole rhetoric about enabling the community to protect it self from police abuse is merely a cover. Nonetheless it’s clever and it’s likely attractive to some people in a community like Ferguson.
I was not aware of the “two ladies” arrests, I’ll try to find out more later if you don’t have a link handy.

Actually didn’t reply to your post until I read it. I don’t sit on a computer all day, I have a life, which includes the grandkids.
Have other things more important in life than replying to someone who won’t do any research outside of a few LWNJ chosen sites.

I do admit that my computer is my escape from a very full and stressful life. but I don’t sit on it all day. Too many people depending on me for that. At seventy years of age, I do need my restful diversions. As for the lack of research on my part, you have no idea what you are talking about. Researching many, many, subjects and ideas on an extremely wide and varied field of knowledge, is a very large part of my life. Give me a subject, problem, situation, or need of any kind and my brain goes into High Speed Overtime Mode.

Okay, here is the solution. first all guns are laid down. Then one group is given large squeeze bottles of Mustard and the other group gets large bottles of Ketchup. Send the police home. Let the two groups have at it. Then call in the fire Dept. to wash down the mess. Problem solved and both groups would probably end up laughing their asses off together.

Let me start by saying, I wholeheartedly support the right to carry a firearm. It is a right I exercise, when I feel the need to do so. However, these people are not a part of the Ferguson community and they are interceding, where they don’t belong. If a reporter is endangered, he should see to his own safety. It’s not for a bunch of yahoos in camo and Kevlar, to “ride to the rescue”. If someone needs armed protection, he can carry his own firearm or hire his own security.
Their presence is designed to inflame and provoke, regardless of what excuses they use. That’s MY opinion, anyway. I COULD be wrong, but I doubt it.
