Redford: ‘Last Chance’ To Fix Climate

Posted by | June 30, 2015 08:00 | Filed under: Planet Politics

Actor Robert Redford told the United Nations it’s our “last chance” to save the planet.

“This December, the world must unite behind a common goal,” said the American actor and producer.

“Because look, this is it. This is our only planet, our only life source.

“This may be our last chance.”

World governments will try to forge a new global accord to address climate change at a UN climate conference in Paris in December, with both developed and developing countries committing to cutting greenhouse gas emissions.

Yes, he flew there in a plane that burns hydrocarbons and yes, he drove there in a car that burns hydrocarbons. That’s how our current transportation system works. Denial-trolls, can we move on now that I’ve said it for you?

    • infojunkie June 30th, 2015 at 09:03

Doesn’t mean what he is saying isn’t true.

You forgot to mention Al Gore’s weight…that’s gotta work in there somewhere, doesn’t it?

      • Roctuna June 30th, 2015 at 09:59

How forgetful of me, of course that must be mentioned. Thanks.

Earth’s survival vs the fossil fuel fallout of the greediest Kochtopus

OK, in all fairness, lets see what the experts over at the fair and balanced network have to say on this subject.

    • whatthe46 June 30th, 2015 at 09:55

      no way… really?

      • Roctuna June 30th, 2015 at 09:58

        That’s fair and balanced math

Can’t believe we have to convince people to save the planet, it seems like common sense is lacking which proves holes in Darwin’s Theory.

you cannot reduce emissions given current technology, without reducing GDP. you cannot reduce GDP, given current political systems, without reducing the living standards of the poor.

    • Roctuna June 30th, 2015 at 18:58

Thank you for that comment, spokeperson for the Heartland Institute.

I don’t know what the heartland institute is. Perhaps you have some information-based counter-point you’d like to add

No, just my sarcasm-based reply. You can google as well as anyone, I’m sure.

“..reducing GDP”.GWB / Cheney’s faux Iraq oil wars shrunk Jr’s meager $12 T Q4-08 GDP to ‘minus -9% APR, losing 8.9 M Jobs!’ And lowered real GDP via USA’s cost of $17 T+ in Great Recession lost asset values. you cannot reduce GDP, given current political systems, without reducing the living standards of the poor.”-? You really don’t know anything about renewable energy efficiency lowering and eliminating dirty fuels rising costs, while offsetting fossil fuel fallout killing and sickening Americans today! Similarly you don’t know USA’s 2014 record $17.5 T GDP grew +3 % APR amid POTUS Obama’s ‘Greenest Admin’ e.g. “US Navy defends ‘great green fleet’ from Republican attacks!http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2012/jul/20/us-navy-great-green-fleet-republicans

As the technology stands today, alternative methods of electricity generation are not efficient, or even truly “clean” enough to solve the problem. Many parts of these alternative technologies rely on “rare-earth minerals” of which there is a finite and dwindling supply. And these products are not easily recycled, and they will break down and need constant repair and replacing. Additionally they cause their own environmental devastation in the areas we will need to stage these technologies (spanning hundreds if not thousands of square miles across the globe, in various places). And the areas that are windy or sunny enough so that these technologies will produce sufficiently high yields, are not located near major urban centers – so you will have to transmit the power – further decreasing yield and efficiency (and exacerbating environmental destruction). And these technologies are un-reliable, given changing and unpredictable weather patterns. Additionally, the factories needed to produce these technologies will need to run on something – usually coal – so that there is a certain amount of fossil fuel burning built right into every solar panel, further reducing the gains we can expect to make from switching over. And finally – coal and oil will always be cheaper and easier to utilize, so no matter how much we invest in expanding the use of wind and solar and other technologies, the developing world (and other areas not under military control) will continue to utilize fossil fuels. Any gains we make in the developed world in terms of reducing carbon emissions, will be eaten up by the “growth” of development in other places that don’t have the money or inclination to spend more on solar to get less electricity out of it. So our economy will suffer relative to other economies that don’t make this change over to alternatives. So as you can see, this is a bigger problem than it is normally presented as, with far more serious implications politically than I think most well-meaning conservationists are willing to realize – AND at the end of the day the technological solutions are not yet all that promising anyway.

You & your Koch Bros obviously don’t know anything accurate about today’s Renewable Energy breakthrough technologies: “EU’s #1 German economy is the greenest on Earth! Germany sets New Record, Generating 74% Of Power needs…” — Obewon http://disq.us/8nturv

I am not rooting for alternative energy to fail, I actually love my planet and want it to be clean and healthy for generations to come. I am merely pointing out many of the problems with the alternative energy “solutions” that have been offered.

Guess why oil & coal stocks are so far down, especially today?
A: you can’t give that crap away today. People are much brighter than you climate deniers.

I suggest you take a look at California’s economy. You know, the one that can be measured on a world scale? Or I guess you can just keep assuming that your oil industry overlords have your best interests at heart and speak only the truth.

    • fahvel July 1st, 2015 at 01:56

oh yes you can- just take a bit from the rich mofo’s and move it somewhere where it will do good rather than heat a fking indoor pool on a penthouse.
