Glenn Greenwald: ‘The Fear Of Terrorism Has Been Exploited’

Posted by | June 10, 2015 10:00 | Filed under: Politics Radio Interviews

Journalist Glenn Greenwald was on radio with me last night discussing the NSA, the Patriot Act, and how fear has been ramped up to exploit terrorism. He also reacted to Senator Rand Paul’s stance against the Patriot Act.

GREENWALD: I think he did a positive thing. He provoke a debate that in Washington has been sorely lacking over the last 14 years which is the extent to we want to give up our civil liberties in the name of a threat, terrorism, that has proven to be far less than it’s been made out to be…

I think the fear of terrorism has been exploited in all kinds of venues and it’s a really potent motivator. I mean human beings are just biologically are driven by fear of things they consider to be dangerous and so until we start thinking more rationally about the terrorist threat, it will be really hard for any politician, even the ones who want to do it, unlike Obama, to actually make progress.

Greenwald addressed his relationship with Edward Snowden, with whom he is in regular contact, and discussed how Snowden is doing abroad and whether or not it’s likely he’ll ever return to America.

Without fear, there would be no GOP.

I’m not afraid of terrorist attacks on American soil. They ARE going to happen, at some point, Patriot Act or no Patriot Act, but I’m not afraid. I’m prepared. I don’t count on the government to keep me safe, as an individual. That’s not their job. It’s their job to keep America, as a nation, safe, but not individual Americans. I’m just going to live my life, enjoy my days and not worry about what I can’t control. When an attack DOES happen, If I survive the initial violence, I’ll do what’s necessary to survive and help other people to survive. We don’t need a Patriot Act for that.

It’s important to keep the masses scared sh!tless. After all, if we didn’t give people a reason to be afraid, they won’t support unnecessary wars.
