Indiana Restaurant Owner: As A Christian He Understands Gays, Just Doesn’t Want Them Around

Posted by | March 30, 2015 15:00 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Top Stories

A caller to a radio show identified only as “Ryan” says he wants the right to discriminate so as not to make his customers “uncomfortable.”  I wonder how, if you’re sitting in a restaurant, you know which gender is preferred by the person at the next table.

[He] said that as a Christian he understands that some people have a different “lifestyle” than him, but he doesn’t want them coming into his place of business and making his customers “uncomfortable.”

The hosts did not let him off easy, asking directly if he has ever discriminated against gay people in his restaurant. “I have discriminated,” he said openly, explaining that he has pretended there was a problem with his kitchen in order to not serve them in the past.

“That makes you feel OK?” Rachel Bogle asked him. “I mean, when you get a bed at night saying, ‘I’ve discriminated against other human beings,’ you feel at ease with that?”

Ryan said he feels fine about it because he believes he should be able to do whatever he wants in his own restaurant. “We don’t want to have this in our place of business, it’s just not right,” he said. But while the caller was happy to share his story, he would not say the name of his restaurant.

” but he doesn’t want them coming into his place of business and making his customers “uncomfortable.”
How would they know? The gay people I know don’t display any sort of clothing, badge, or ID bracelet that lets anybody know what their orientation is?

    • rg9rts March 30th, 2015 at 15:32

He waits till christmas for them to don their gay apparel???

    • Larry Schmitt March 30th, 2015 at 15:35

They have more flair than straight people.

    • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:21

I like that–“Gay or non-gay dining this evening?” and hey–what if it’s a mixed table? Some of my best friends are straight…

  2. Snick1946 March 30th, 2015 at 15:09

Let’s see- two males come in together and want to buy lunch- seems like an everyday thing to me. How the hell do you tell if they are gay or not?

I am starting to wonder if some of these doofuses think they can ‘tell’ if someone is gay.

    • nola878 March 30th, 2015 at 16:54

To be on the safe side, I’d recommend he turn away all parties of two or more males.

      • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:19

Definitely. And as always, no need to worry about the women. We all know that “lesbian” is just a term for a woman who hasn’t had sex with a real man yet…(snark–the truth is that as always, they just don’t think it’s all that important what women do as long as supper’s on the table and their shirts are clean and there’s cold beer in the fridge…)

      • fahvel March 31st, 2015 at 03:37

oh yeah – what about them bad ass gays who go cruising cheap shit red neck diners looking for a burger?

  3. rg9rts March 30th, 2015 at 15:31

How does he know if they are gay???? Once the word gets out I’m sure he will learn the price of intolerance

    • Larry Schmitt March 30th, 2015 at 15:36

Let’s hope he pays the price.

      • rg9rts March 30th, 2015 at 15:48

        Karma baby karma

        • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:15

I like that instant karmic kickback. Indiana is already getting it and the law isn’t even in effect yet. If they want to fix this, they should repeal it before it goes in effect. Maybe the pope would grant an annulment…(snrk)

          • rg9rts March 30th, 2015 at 17:24

That is the difference between us and them…they don’t care who they hurt..even themselves… Look at Kansas…and now that moron Walker wants to take Wisconsin down the same path

    • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:13

He’d be surprised to learn just how many gay people he actually knows and/or has served over the years. Gay people tend not to bring it up around bigots.

  4. Larry Schmitt March 30th, 2015 at 15:34

I’m sure teh gays feel the same about him.

    • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:11

It would be fun to have a little cafe next door with a sign that says “no bigots allowed”. Maybe give it a nice rainbow paint job like the group that moved in across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church.

  5. Bunya March 30th, 2015 at 15:39

So why concoct lame excuses like “problems with his kitchen”? Why not just say his god doesn’t approve of gays, therefore neither does he? He should at least be man enough to embrace his bigotry.
    .
Maybe he can put a big sign on in his window that says, “No Gays Allowed”. Then, in a couple of weeks, he can replace it with a “Going Out of Business” sign.

    • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:09

I agree. Let people know up front. It’s not just gay people who would see the sign and go elsewhere.

  6. Suzanne McFly March 30th, 2015 at 16:22

So men that know how to coordinate their own wardrobe and wear something other than a flannel shirt and jeans or females that are tom boys probably would not be allowed? What does his check-off list look like?

    • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:07

Exactly. A lot of people have been beaten up because they were perceived to be gay. Where I live (rural, remote) women dress for the weather and the type of work they do. I guess that would set off their gaydar. I mean really–will we be required to show our minority status ID cards so they could determine whether or not to deny service? Lapel pins maybe? They really haven’t thought this through. The good news is that a lot of them–bigot-owned businesses and red states that enact these laws–will eventually go bankrupt from the lawsuits.

      • jasperjava March 30th, 2015 at 21:34

Maybe gays should wear a pink triangle, Jews get a yellow star, etc.

  7. Warman1138 March 30th, 2015 at 16:26

Has anybody ever noticed that a lot of GOP led states get weirder over time, or is it just my imagination?

    • rg9rts March 30th, 2015 at 16:56

They have the legislatures to match…how do you think the vaginal probe became the toy of choice in Virginia?? Every election counts not just the local ones.. Virginia is for lovers??? NOT…You can be arrested for having sex with someone that is not your spouse

      • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:23

Seriously, what is it with these guys? Vagina envy?

        • rg9rts March 31st, 2015 at 01:46

Land of small gummint till it comes to your bedroom

          • bluejayray March 31st, 2015 at 12:11

That reminds me–it’s time to sweep for bugs and hidden cameras again…

    • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:02

      Religious home-schooling.

  8. nola878 March 30th, 2015 at 16:54

Hey Ryan, if you’re so darn proud, why don’t you identify yourself and your restaurant?

My mother was born and raised in Indiana. Glad she’s not around to see this. She’d be ashamed of her home state.

    • bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 17:01

I do think that the best counter-bill would be to make businesses post a list on their door stating just which people they need to discriminate according to their deeply held religious beliefs…You’d think they’d want to say it loud and proud so that bigots would flock to their place.

  9. bluejayray March 30th, 2015 at 16:58

…should be able to do whatever he wants in his own restaurant? Does that include food-handling practices and sanitation standards? Just curious…

  10. Warman1138 March 30th, 2015 at 17:25

If one was to discriminate for religious reasons, shouldn’t it be for everything? Sinners, other faiths, all proscribed acts and activities, atheists, etc. I would suspect it would turn into a very small customer base and maybe a very dumb, weird, biased, angry and mean customer base.

  11. bpollen March 30th, 2015 at 17:34

They should be forced to list the people they discriminate against in all ads, and in signage on the front of the store large enough to be read from across the street! Be proud bigots! Not rats scurrying in the shadows and claiming mousehood when the lights go on.

  12. viva_democracy March 30th, 2015 at 18:01

Put a sticker in your window coward that says you discriminate. If you were really so proud of your bigotry, you’d do it, but you’re scared sh!tless of losing the almighty dollar that you wouldn’t. I’ll bet you’ve never even used that lame-o excuse on anyone either. You’re all talk, probably 400lbs and sitting in your momma’s basement making that call.

Ryan said he feels fine about it because he believes he should be able
to do whatever he wants in his own restaurant. “We don’t want to have
this in our place of business, it’s just not right,”

You know who else said that, Ryan? You don’t have to go far back in history to remember the ole Blacks not welcome here signs.

    • Khary A March 30th, 2015 at 18:05

Proper and if given the choice he would probably have that sign in the window as well.

  13. Carla Akins March 30th, 2015 at 18:16

What is it that he understands, and what is it that they’re doing in his establishment that’s making him uncomfortable? Does he think “gay” means ripping off their clothes and having sex on the table? Have his customer’s approached him and asked “are you going to let teh gays in?” Is it possible that he has any idea how ridiculous he sounds?

  14. Chinese Democracy March 31st, 2015 at 02:03

I wonder if a private ambulance company in Indiana as the right not to transport a dying gay man?

Libertarians have always wanted the right to discriminate. But since ALL the people pay for the road to get to his business. He has to serve ALL the people. Save the discrimination for his own home.

  15. fahvel March 31st, 2015 at 03:34

with the wonderful internet, his restaurant can be found. Find it and give him hours of free publicity.

  16. Aunt Pee March 31st, 2015 at 06:50

I want the right to refuse service to Bible-beating Christians. If they complain about persecution I think we should throw them to the lions.

    • tracey marie March 31st, 2015 at 13:25

I have a lion, tell me where to bring him

  17. tracey marie March 31st, 2015 at 13:25

a phony xtians admits to lying and judging….

  18. mrbigstuff March 31st, 2015 at 16:27

Didnt they use to do that to black people? How did that work out for racist?

  19. illinoisboy1977 April 2nd, 2015 at 14:37

As a straight man, I have an inherent aversion to homosexual acts. I, personally, wouldn’t do ANYTHING sexual with another man. That being said, I don’t understand where people get off thinking they can apply their own preferential standards, to other people. I don’t care if two men are hot for each other; it’s not like they’re asking me to join in. As a Christian business owner, I’d be as happy to serve gays, as I would be to serve straights. Their money spends just as well as anyone else’s.
As a Christian, I’m supposed to follow the teachings of Christ. Foremost in my mind are, “judge not, lest ye be judged” and “let he who is without sin cast the first stone”.
Who am I to judge the proclivities of others? I’m so far from perfect, it’ll take the light from perfect about 2 million years to reach me!
