Liberaland Update And One More Question For The Community

Posted by | February 2, 2015 15:15 | Filed under: Top Stories

Thanks for all your feedback about what you like/don’t like, want/don’t want. As a result, I’ve decided to move to the Andes and become a shepherd I have a good idea about what will work for us.  Of course, no site is perfect, and no matter what changes you make not everyone will like everything about them. What I want the site to be is great aggregator of liberal/progressive content, so when you come here you know what the most important stories are at any moment, along with commentary by our opinion writers and your ability to interact with us and each other.

To sum it up: You like the open threads, because it gives us a sense of community.  In the next version of Liberaland, I want to have an ongoing open thread where you can post what you want.  There will also be an easy way to give me tips on stories. (You can do that now via the “submit a story” link on the upper left of the home page).

You really hated it when headlines linked outside the site and you couldn’t comment. You’d like at least a little more information about the headline on a post page before deciding if you want to go to the original source of the story to see the whole thing.

You also like original content in addition to links to the best progressive stuff on the web.  To that end, we will continue our opinion pieces (and are always looking for new writers who’d like to contribute).  A few of you would like fewer stories and more to each story, but most of the response has showed me that a large number of readers would like to see lots of stories when you hit the front page.

So, now, my question is, how would you like to see the front page of the site presented? Would you like to see a site with lots of headlines arranged like Drudge does, but where the links go to post pages rather than outside the site, so you get a bit more info, and can comment? Rogers Cadenhead does a good job that way, but his links go to the original source. I’ve decided that won’t work for us, as you want more info than just the headlines.

Would you like to retain the look of this site but with three columns and more stories on the front page?

Or do you like a look that is more graphic, where  you can see images, behind the headlines and then click on the headlines to get more info? Below is a screen shot of our friend Anomaly’s site, FreakOutNation. What if the entire front page had this kind of interface?

As usual, your comments are greatly appreciated.

    No
Don’t lose the flavor of the progressive slant. News for the sake of news is boring.

Not talking about losing the progressive slant or news for the sake of news. I only put up content I think is worthwhile.

I like the middle one and thanks for considering those outside links, I have ended up on the bizarre side of the internet without realizing it and had to scroll up and see where I was…most unsettling!

I will throw my 2cents in for what it is worth.. I DO NOT like Drudge’s site..it is just gawd awful from my standpoint… The way you assemble things here I would not fix.. if it isn’t broke , no sense in fixing it. Your site and the way it is set up is what drew me to it.
If you have your heart bent on fixing this..I will say – FreakOut Nation is good

Drudge site is “so” 1995, when I get dozens of AOL starter CDs mailed to me each month.

      • CharlieMA February 2nd, 2015 at 13:57

I do not know about AOL.. I think I was on it for about 5 minutes back in the day.. but I believe ya…

      Confusing, your post is.
      Clarify, you should.

Too much ‘hair of the dog’ today? Fighting with a superbowl hangover?

      • Pilotshark February 2nd, 2015 at 16:44

        nope,, :-)

trying to say, I like both sites, being two different sites, be nice that both didn’t have the same look or feel.

i will now perform the easy maneuver of removing my head from my fourth point of contact, so do not let the loud POP distract you:-)

As said, I *really* hate the Drudge ‘style’ – but it seems like what you like, Alan – so why not give it a shot? I’m mostly interested in the original content & discussions, but you’ve been doing this internet thingy for a long time, Alan – go w/ yer gut. Users never know what they want anyway ;^)

    • Alan February 3rd, 2015 at 08:31

Ultimately, I’ll go with my gut, but the feedback has been very helpful.

Alan hope all is well?… Sorry I did not get back to you on your questions 4 days ago..

You mentioned about Drudge and Graphics….here are my thoughts:

You do not find it kind of ‘busy’
(drudge).. and about graphics.. Many people cannot afford to upgrade
their computers to have the ability to run a lot of graphics..and as it
is at times.. even your site tends to be slow loading due to the few
graphics you have running at any given time (pop up).. if not for the
fact that this is your site.. I probably wouldn’t be here and put
myself at times through the pain ..lol .. seriously .. graphics do tend
to interfere and in conjunction with an individual’s computer
system…unless they have the ‘bread’ to upgrade ..if they can..some
systems cannot and they have to go through the grueling time of waiting
    for pages to load..
