Curt Schilling Says Being A Conservative Keeps Him Out Of Hall Of Fame

Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame, but didn’t get in. However, he is meeting one of the primary requirements of being a Hall of Fame Conservative: playing the victim. You see, despite his record in the Majors (and some controversy about possibly faking his famous bloody sock), he believes, without question, that he is worthy of being elected into Cooperstown. Since he wasn’t, he reasons it must be because of his political beliefs.

The former pitcher, who was denied entry into Cooperstown for a third straight year Tuesday, claimed that being a high-profile Republican caused some voters to leave him off their ballots. Schilling hinted as much Wednesday in an interview with Boston radio station WEEI by suggesting that newly elected Hall of Famer John Smoltz got the necessary votes for induction because of his supposed Democratic leanings. “[Smoltz] is a Hall-of-Famer. And I think the other big thing is that I think he’s a Democrat, and so… I know that as a Republican, that there’s some people who really don’t like that,” Schilling said.

Never mind the fact that Smoltz has donated to the GOP. No need for conservatives to deal with facts, of course. If Schilling needs to have a big sad and play the victim, that’s fine.  Maybe we can send this guy some cheese to go with his whine.

No Kurt, they don’t elect you because you are an asshole, have always been an asshole, and will always be an asshole. Just ask anyone who had to play alongside you. You have as much “personality” as a bag of dead badgers. (sorry badgers)

That doesn’t disqualify him. The Hall is full of assholes.

Could be the politics but more likely it’s just that for most of his career he lost as many as he won. He had some dominating seasons near the end of his career when he was on a very good Arizona team, otherwise strictly a journeyman with average numbers. He’s got the persecution shtick down pat though.

He didn’t get in because he sucked.
Which doesn’t necessarily disprove his claim…

Schilling was a good pitcher, to be sure, but he was also, as you might say if you’re from Boston, “a fair asshole.”

Perhaps even more galling to Schilling is that his co-ace for a few years at Boston, Pedro Martinez, with whom Schill had a somewhat public nasty relationship, made it in this year– on his first try. Schilling’s had three goes, and didn’t even get close in any of them.

For the purpose of comparison, by any objective measure Martinez is the far better pitcher, so there’s that– but the truth is that Hall of Fame status isn’t about stats alone, it’s about bringing something more to the game, and Schill’s dickishness isn’t helping.

I don’t know that anyone cares about his politics, other than inasmuch as it reflects that dickishness, as shown in a hilarious recent series of twitterings in which transitional fossil Schill “proves” that evolution is a myth.

ESPN writer Keith Law helpfully chipped in with some troo fax for Schill, and got fuck all for his efforts. Doubt if he voted for Schill in the BBWAA HOF poll, hee hee.

Man I hate whiners and most of these RWers are the biggest whiners around. Buck up buttercup. Stop telling others to take personal responsibility when you can’t even do it yourself.
