NRA Supporters Launch Vicious, Misogynistic Twitter Attack On Gun Reform Leader

Posted by | December 27, 2014 15:15 | Filed under: News Behaving Badly Politics Top Stories

When Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, was blocked by the NRA on Twitter yesterday, she tweeted it. It shall come as a surprise to no one ever that that was met with a slew of vicious misogynistic remarks by NRA supporters.

Even though the NRA claims Watts is an insignificant threat to their organization, they found it necessary to block her on social media.

The mother of 5 frightens them that much. She’s a beautiful and intelligent woman, so naturally, she’s a threat.

It started with this tweet.

Naturally, that innocuous tweet became a platform to attack the Gun Sense advocate by NRA supporters. The hashtag #ImBlockedByShannonWatts started trending on Twitter.
The alleged human responsible for creating that hashtag is none other than Julie Golob, world shooting champion and author of the book “Shooting While Pregnant.” No, really.

So Ms. Watts is retweeting some vulgar responses to her one tweet.

Oh, this is such a winning strategy.

And this tweet by Katie Pavlich gave the onslaught some legs:

NRA supporters, I have some advice for you. If you want to appear to be female-friendly, don’t call a woman a “Bitch”, a “cunt”, “twat’ or tell her she needs to “get back in the kitchen.”

Include “bimbo” to the list of things not to call a woman.

Ms. Watts isn’t too worried about the vicious attack.

Big thanks to my pal out there for collecting the tweets. You rock.

Shannon and her ilk have blocked hundreds if not thousands of people on social media….The irony is nauseating. They value “dialog” but after they are shown the facts they stick their heads in the sand and block people they dont agree with.

In regards to disrespectful comments made towards Watts, respect goes both ways, must be earned, and she’s done neither. She makes a case against their rights then swiftly blocks them to make it appear that everyone sides with her position. If you’re going to make a case against someone’s rights, you should be prepared to justify that case and she refuses to do that. Furthermore, she barks out how evil guns are then hires men with guns. If I was a follower, I’d wonder why it’s OK for her but not for me. It’s been her position that citizens are far safer waiting for the police but she doesn’t wait for the police. She keeps them in her wallet. As far as her being told to get back in the kitchen, she brought that on herself when she demonized mothers that actually take responsibility for protecting their family. Her defenseless damsel in distress stance/mentality makes women look like they can’t stand on their own thus belong back in the kitchen. As a critical thinking woman and mother, her agenda and hypocrisy offends me. Rather than seeing the need to protect children from govt’s failure to protect anyone, she cries out for thicker GunSense lines in the sand for the freaks to step over. Not all the GunSense in the world will correct bad behavior, deter crime, or see into the future to know who will eventually snap. Her children don’t have to worry about that though because she provides protection for them. You and I…we’re not so lucky and she’d consider us evil for trying.

Go to their Facebook page and see if you can find any opposing comments. If you’re lucky enough to find one, capture it and wait a few minutes. Is it still there? If it is, the admin must be asleep at the wheel. While she stands on her slacktivist soapbox telling everyone else must do and give up for her cause, she gives up and does nothing for her cause. Maybe…just maybe, if she had some real skin in the game she’d be respected. For now, because respect is earned and goes both ways, she’s earned the comments you’re seeing.

At this point, gun owners have a real reason to be angry. We are fed up with giving things up and jumping through hoops for this cause. Truth be told, GunSense is just a new word for what the govt has been trying to do for decades via laws, regulations, bans, and ever expanding background checks that deter nothing and STILL can’t see into the future or stop those that skirt laws. Why do folks keep expecting the govt to do what it has no duty to do and historically failed to do for DECADES? I just don’t get it. GunSense doesn’t want to hear any of that though, right?

Possibly the worst metaphor ever, and such lack of reasoning, that I cannot stop laughing..
You sad guys with your gun phobias, fear of loss of such, and rampant paranoia…

      • Krabtastic December 29th, 2014 at 17:29

I tend to laugh at inappropriate times when I misunderstand things, as well. What part of the reasoning did you have trouble comprehending? Was it the part where gun owners were tired of “taking one for the team” while no one else on the team is sacrificing anything? Could it have been gun owners recognizing that the more laws are made the more they’re ignored and it’s leaving folks defenseless? Maybe it was the part where we wonder why it’s only us that recognize cops show up late to the party so why does GunSense want everyone to keep waiting for them? It very well could be that you don’t like being told to stop shirking your duty to protect yourself, or at the very least, stop expecting everyone else to shirk with you. That seems to be a common theme with GunSense. They really do like telling everyone what to do but hate being told what they must do. No matter how many stories about the police showing up late or how words on paper failing to keep an abuser away, their defenseless agenda and pseudo-morally superiority will get in the way of seeing the reality about society. So, please tell me again, what was it that confused you. I think gun owners have spoken quite clearly lately.

        • eyelashviper December 29th, 2014 at 18:38

And WTF makes you think that I, or others here, who support all kinds of reasonable gun control, do not own guns???
          Your jibberish is laughable.

        • Gin1234 December 29th, 2014 at 19:16

Your need to be defended and to defend are part of your delusion. In 58 years I have never needed the defense of someone with a gun. That is not to say that I will never in my lifetime need to call the police, but your obsession with having to have a gun at all times to defend yourself is funny.

          • Krabtastic December 29th, 2014 at 22:48

“In 58 years I have never needed the defense of someone with a gun.”

I am happy for you and hope your life stays that way but this is exactly why you’ll never understand because you’ve never been forced to wait for help to come. You’ve got no skin in the game. What gives you the right to determine the how, when, or need to exercise a right? Would you want your rights, desires, or NEEDS determined by those that can’t even respect your basic rights? Rights are not based on need and need not be justified to you or anyone else.

        • tracey marie December 29th, 2014 at 19:26

          • Krabtastic December 29th, 2014 at 22:25

Yet you’ve failed to bring anything but insults. Am I to assume you’re simply unable to defend your position that govt has done an excellent job protecting citizens with their over efficient bureaucracy?

    • Scar December 29th, 2014 at 17:09

Actually, I was asking a similar question back when they were calling
for new laws. They told gun owners to compromise, yet they never said
what THEY were giving up with the new laws.

      • tracey marie December 29th, 2014 at 19:26

They gave their dead children to your kind

        • Krabtastic December 29th, 2014 at 22:21

Oh hon…don’t get it twisted. If it had been for our kind, Lanza would’ve been met with opposition. They were defenseless as a result of gun control legislation/policies that foolishly thought that words on paper would protect someone. The most tragic part of this is that you want them to stay that way. GunSense is a dangerously defenseless mindset. If you want to trust that Lanza would still be stopped by adding more words on paper, go for it but leave my kids out of it. I want them to have a fighting chance…not be in the ground while someone blames everything but failed gun control policies for their death.

          • Carla Akins December 29th, 2014 at 22:36

Guns do not belong in schools. Period. If it hadn’t been a school it would have been somewhere else, he was sick. But feel free to go comment on the story of the 2 Amendment fan that killed his wife over the weekend. Let us know how guns would’ve fixed that one.

            • Krabtastic December 29th, 2014 at 23:45

Unlike the domestic dispute that involved 2 individuals that didn’t drag others in the middle, he did choose to drag others in the middle of his nightmare by going to a school where the govt rendered them defenseless through laws and policies. If you truly believe that guns don’t belong there, then don’t soapbox on the deaths that happen there when your desires have been fulfilled. You don’t want guns there and they weren’t there but the policies didn’t make any plans to stop freaks that ignored your wishes and the individuals in the school paid the ultimate price for your wishes. You may have FELT safe that day but they WEREN’T safe that day. Job well done, GunSense. How many more lives is GunSense willing to sacrifice till the govt gets it right? They’ve only been working on it since the 30’s, right? They’re bound to get it right sooner or later. There’s always going to be a little collateral damage while they work out the bugs, right? Are you willing to offer your child’s life for their experiment? You shouldn’t have a problem considering you had no problem allowing those other children being offered up for your wish to “feel” safe rather than actually being safe. GunSense is too busy blaming everyone else for what happens as the result of their policies to see how they’re actually contributing to the problem they’re telling everyone else how to fix. The solution is there…stop pointing fingers and take a hard look in the mirror. Reality is a bitter pill to swallow and just because you refuse to swallow it doesn’t mean it ceases to exist.

              • Carla Akins December 30th, 2014 at 04:41

The odds of my child being shot by an “Adam Lanza” is 1 in 14 million, killed 1 in 7 million. The odds of my child being struck and killed by a random bullet while spending 5 days a week in a building with multiple firearms 1 in 1.3 million. I’ll take my chances – and before you start throwing blame around I’m the one that wants better screening jackass. I don’t want Adam Lanza’s to ever be able to put their hands on a gun. If efforts such as yours that continue to make it possible.
Everybody shouldn’t be able to get a fucking gun.

            • James December 30th, 2014 at 15:13

Okay, would you please comment on how the gun laws stopped the liberal democrat in California from killing three with a gun and three with a knife? Or for that matter how all of the gun free zones have worked out? Columbine wasn’t a gun free zone? Newtown wasn’t a gun free zone? VA Tech? Navy Shipyard? CO movie theater? ALL gun free zones. So what exactly did your laws fix?

              • dragontech64 December 30th, 2014 at 21:53

By your logic, we should throw out ALL laws, since making something illegal NEVER completely stops that activity from occurring. So we’ll just leave murder, robbery, drunk driving, fraud, assault, rape, etc as legal? Typical gun nut LACK of logic.

Sadly, you seem to have bought in to Ms. Watts’ (and her financier, Mr. Bloomberg’s) rhetoric. Ms. Watts (formerly a corporate mouthpiece for Monsanto….explain again how she is concerned with public safety?) didn’t speak out against gun ownership until after Sandy Hook….so it wasn’t a concern of hers while inner city minority children are being killed, only when affluent children die.

Her group consistently uses inaccurate data, skewed research, and out-of-date surveys.
When confronted with their errors, her followers go on the attack, threatening the individuals pointing out the errors, their children, trying to contact their employers to get them fired.

She also has followers who feel it is within their “rights” to call the police and lie about law-abiding gun owners who may be carrying in public, in hopes of getting them killed – not arrested – killed.

She has a following of people who seem to believe they know what’s best for the rest of society; that their phobias trump individual rights.

She has yet to explain how stricter gun laws will force criminals to comply. She has yet to offer real solutions for curbing violence. Instead, she strives for media attention on the backs of victims.

The misogynistic attacks are unprofessional and, frankly, miss the mark. She and her followers are much worse: an arrogant, narcissistic demagogue, with a billionaire suggar-daddy – both feeding off well-intentioned, but naive citizens, who may genuinely want to address gun violence (albeit I’m sure many just want something to do to make them feel superior while chatting over coffee), all to keep their names in the media.

Until I see them marching in South Chicago, Watts (oh, the irony!), Detroit, inner city D.C. or any other crime ridden neighborhood – without their armed security detail – they will be nothing more than another bunch of middle and upper-class hypocrites.

      • Greg Starr December 29th, 2014 at 17:01

However, purposefully publishing erroneous or skewed statistics does invalidate the position presented, as does the continued failure to present actual solutions (which would require actual research and work, and aren’t as likely to result in media attention. Mental health care, education, parenting: no reporter would cover those topics.). Add to that her group’s refusal to provide transparency into its finances (merging with another Bloomberg-funded group just before a deadline to file financial disclosure documents) and her calls for public safety and “what about the children” ring hollow.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tu_quoque: “To clarify, although the person being attacked might indeed be acting inconsistently or hypocritically, such behavior does not invalidate the position presented.”

      • Greg Starr December 29th, 2014 at 18:01

However, purposefully publishing erroneous or skewed statistics does invalidate the position presented, as does the continued failure to present actual solutions (which would require actual research and work, and aren’t as likely to result in media attention. Mental health care, education, parenting: no reporter would cover those topics.). Add to that her group’s refusal to provide transparency into its finances (merging with another Bloomberg-funded group just before a deadline to file financial disclosure documents) and her calls for public safety and “what about the children” ring hollow.

    • tracey marie December 29th, 2014 at 20:24

and by your very comments TM you are indicative of every anti gunner i have ever come across on MDA, Everytown or MAIG… you belittle, and denigrate anyone who does not have the same opinion as yourself.

Are you saying that the Anti-gun, MDA and other “like” venues dont do the same?
Wishing that gun owners kids get killed with their weapons, Threatening to call the cops on people “open-carrying” in hopes the cops come and shoot them on site?

                Its a two way street.

                • Carla Akins December 29th, 2014 at 20:20

Do they wish your children dead, call you a cunt, threaten to rape you?

As a matter of point, if I see someone walking down the street with a rifle strapped to their back – I’m calling 911. I do not know this person’s intent, nor should I be required to determine the intent. This is why we have law enforcement. There is no way to know if it’s the next Adam Lanza or CJ Grisham but I am not risking my family’s life worrying about hurting some jackass’s feelings.

                  • CatInCT December 30th, 2014 at 06:19

I hope that you are pleased with the results of that. Thanks to people like you, at least two innocent people have been killed by police recently while carrying toy guns. Why don’t you explain to John Crawford and Tamir Rice’s families how “sensible” and “reasonable” it is to call 911 every time you think you see a gun. Law enforcement does such a great job in these situations. See how many more deaths of innocent people you can cause.

You’re an idiot. the deaths of Rice and Crawford lie directly at the feet of systemic abuse of authority. If you are in fear for your life you should be able to call 911 and have law enforcement respond properly. To say it’s a reasonable expectation is a tremendous understatement.

Keeping guns out the hands of children, the mentally and the too stupid to be responsible has absolutely nothing to do with their deaths. You and your attitude that any and everyone should carry a gun is dangerous to the public at large. JFC, please.

            • Carla Akins December 30th, 2014 at 17:28

Right. I’m the must vulgar person here. However, you are fine with condoning the things said to Watts, okay. Nowhere in any of these 1400 comments do you see me call anyone a Nazi or refer to their penis size. These insults are also far from threatening to kill her family or pray she gets raped. There’s truly no comparison. The point was if you think this behavior is okay – you must condone it. They weren’t my words but those of the lovely NRA supporters. I simply made the analogy to put it in context for you. Some find it difficult to put themselves in another’s shoes. My family gun-friendly family is very proud of me and supports reasonable regulations. You’re welcome.

Regarding the much-touted claim of “74 school shootings” since Sandy Hook, as with anything, read the fine print. This number, first dropped into the media circus by the Everytown organization (another Bloomberg-funded group), considers any incident involving the discharge of a fire arm to be a “school shooting”….which is disingenuous, given most people would not conside two criminals shooting at each other on school property on a Sunday evening to be a “school shooting”. But spin is everything nowadays, so it pays to do your own research….much like the statistic that “95% of the public” want stronger background checks. Really? When was the last time 95% of the American public agreed on anything? If you’re going to publish numbers, at least make them credible.

is this the same Shannon Watts who blocked and deleted me and the post i put on MDA page about facts and figures of gun control NOT working in Australia???? The same Ms Watts who refused to debate with me about the pros and cons of gun control and even sent me a threatening message hoping i would die by gun shot? Please report the facts, not fear mongering. I and several others have been blocked by Ms Watts and her crowd, for polite factual posts, nothing more and nothing less. Yet everyday i see nasty, murderous comments being thrown at gun owners by MDA members.

Now lets talk about all the anti-civil rights groups like MDA and Everytown that delete posts and ban people who voice dissenting opinions on their forums.

What is good for the goose is good for the gander.

Meanwhile she blocks anyone that disagrees with her in the slightest. I guess that means they are all winning too? The anti-gunners make reference to men’s penises all day long but that doesn’t make them sexist. Oh the hypocrisy
