Missouri Gov. Nixon On Why National Guard Was Absent

Posted by | December 5, 2014 18:00 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

Governor Jay Nixon explained why North County didn’t have a National Guard presence the night the grand jury announced its verdict in the case of Darren Wilson. Nixon talked to Chris Hayes of Fox2Now/St. Louis.

One guardsmen told me, “We were watching, on TV and smart phones, the city burn, while we stood by ready.”
The 700 Guardsmen who got the call were sent to St. Louis City and Clayton.

We’ve been asking the Governor’s office this week whether St. Louis County`s Police Chief requested Guardsmen in North County.

Thursday in Rolla, I asked, “What`s the answer to the yes or no question, did St. Louis County`s Police Chief ask for North County to be protected?”

Governor Nixon responded, “Well certainly we all worked together to make sure we were working on the dual pillars…

what I`m saying is the plan was that the law enforcement officers who have been trained would be out on the front lines. You didn`t want to have a Kent State situation. You certainly didn`t want to have a situation where Guardsmen who had only been there a few hours, who had not been used to the very kinetic atmosphere of people throwing things, screaming things at the very front tip of that spear. That was the plan. I think it has prevented loss of life.”

Nixon is either a blithering idiot or he wanted the resultant strife to fill some narrative. He isn’t going to be able to spin this to make himself look like some kinda good guy who tried. It was an epic fail, unless it is all part of some devious plan that is still working itself out.

I bet next election voters will have forgotten how badly he effe’d this whole tragedy up and he will win election again.

      • mea_mark December 5th, 2014 at 19:02

Democrats don’t forget as much as right-wingers do. I bet he gets kicked out in the primaries. Then again he might run as a republican.

        • Suzanne McFly December 5th, 2014 at 19:08

I don’t know much about his policies, but he really screwed up as bad as a republican would so I would prefer he change his party affiliation.

“I don’t know much about his policies”
I don’t know either… But his actions sure speak volumes..

Yes they do, I may not know much about him but from what I have seen, he is a pathetic person who is not fairly representing the people he was elected to represent.

        • raincheck December 6th, 2014 at 05:44

He might as well run republican…. That’s what he is, I knew that from the beginning…

Agreed on blithering idiot and epic fail !!!

      • mea_mark December 5th, 2014 at 19:06

Nixon back-stabbed his party, that’s what happened. What’s really disappointing to me is I think he is a distant cousin. Sometimes ignorance is bliss, for me this is one of those occasions.

        • Wayout December 5th, 2014 at 19:32

I’m glad you pointed out his political party. Most of this stuff is happening under Democrat rule and we all should know that the prosecutor in the Missouri case is also a Democrat, and I wonder how many of the grand jurors are also Democrats. For the life of me I don’t understand why black citizens continue to support this political party that is causing them such distress.

          • mea_mark December 5th, 2014 at 19:42

He’s not much of a democrat, more DINO than anything else, but he isn’t as far right-over-the-cliff as the republicans would like. The democrats will clean-up their party, unlike republicans that seem to encourage filth in their party. His support from the democrats is gone.

            • Wayout December 5th, 2014 at 20:14

Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, and others like them are trying to clean up the party from the mess made by the establishment politicians. What you have with Boehner and the Bush’s are Dem lite. They want amnesty, like big government programs, and don’t want to do anything against Obama’s un-constitutional actions.

Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz, represent as much the mess as anybody in the establishment.

And Bush was John Birch Society lite.

Obama is more like Eisenhower, (as Bruce Bartlette called him, “a moderate Republican”).

And Obama’s actions are no more un-constitutional than any other president.

If you want un-constitutional actions… start with Reagan,m than move to your Unitary Executive.

Epic fail indeed since he had more than a month to plan things out. Plus, he had several hours of notice before the Grand Jury’s decision was read. I’m not familiar with the area in question, so I’m wondering, were the guards in the rich/affluent areas and within the Governor’s circumference only?

    I’m either missing something or:
That doesn’t explain the no authority at riot spots at all. Not at all. If NG wasn’t to be the spear(and I get that, no problem), that insinuates that the cops are to be such and if cops have to move to a hot spot, then ng takes up supporting roles that the cops left(kind of like hold territory won, cops move forward, ng holds more)… but no one moved to the hot spots, no one.

He knew all those racists in the National Guard would just be itching to kill black looters, that is why he didn’t send them. Saving lives is more important than saving property.

  7. AnthonyLook December 6th, 2014 at 00:47

I suspect he and others kept the National Guard at bay and allowed the rioting to escalate purposely. They calculated a political benefit. They believed that allowing things to get out of control would result in such bad PR for the protestors that the sentiment against the destruction would serve as support and cover for the now known discrepancies (and complicity) of the McCollough Grand Jury. They could then point the finger at the destruction to prove some justified racist point and the protests would subsequently not continue. They believed that the response would cause the protest to cease. They not only allowed the escalation to happen, they were planning on it.

    • mea_mark December 6th, 2014 at 09:23

Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the destruction was because the Governor sent people out to cause it. Of course he wouldn’t want to stop his own agents so kept the authorities out of the way until the destruction was done and the governors agent could return without getting caught.

Look at howBlanco and Nagin handled Katrina. I think it’s just a Democrat thing… afraid to express real power so they opt for a mere display. Look at Roosevelt, wouldn’t get involved until we lost a huge chunk of our fleet at Pearl Harbour.
