Watch: John Oliver Rips Into The Racism And Militarization Of Police In Ferguson

Posted by | August 18, 2014 13:19 | Filed under: Politics Top Stories

On HBO’s Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver took the situation in Ferguson, Missouri to task highlighting the increased militarization of America’s police departments. Oliver pointed to the statistics of minority police in the force, then applied to the city’s  63% black population.  The host then showed clips of the Mayor of  Ferguson saying that racial tension has never been a problem before.

“Here’s the thing the mayor [of Ferguson] doesn’t understand, “Oliver said. “As a general rule, no one should ever be allowed to say ‘There is no history of racial tension here.’ Because that sentence has never been true anywhere on Earth.”

Oliver showed pictures of the police wearing “f*cking camo” on the streets of Ferguson this past week and said, .“They are northwest of St. Louis, not northwest of the Amazon. If they want to blend in with their surroundings, they should be dressed as a dollar store.”

Oliver pointed to the curfew imposed by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, saying, “If even the governor can’t distinguish between the good and the bad elements in the community, and has decided to punish everyone equally, then that should go both ways.”

“I know the police love their ridiculous and unnecessary military equipment, so here’s another patronizing test: let’s take it all away from them and if they can make through a whole month without killing a single unarmed black man, then –and only then — they can get their f*cking toys back,” he said.

I love me some John Oliver! Last Week Tonight is a great show that should be mandatory watching.

It’s sad with a transplant British comedian is necessary to break down the news the American media is unable to put in perspective. Enjoyable, but sad.

Remember, in all too many cities across America, the local police are there “to serve and to protect” … people living in predominantly white neighborhoods.

The shooting was tragic, the behavior of those violent protesters is inexcusable. There is no room in a civilized society to react this way. Not all the facts have been made known and regardless of what they are, even then there is no reason to behave like un-caged animals.

What other groups in America protest like this? It is example of what is wrong with our young people today when they think they have a right to a violent protest. At least this guy got it right. He is saying what needs to be said about creating a more positive image for your community. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f0mVn0HH6U&feature=youtu.be

Perhaps if Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson said something along those same lines there would be more understanding.

Are you really implying that all African Americans are ‘caged animal violent protestors’? Your spiel sickens me. Do not try to cast everyone of any group in the mold of the few who act out.

I never said anything about race. It is not about race but behavior. Al Sharpton makes it about race, I don’t.

“What other groups in America protest like this?”

White sports fans. They’ll riot when they lose a game. Hell, they’ll riot when they WIN a game. They’ll riot when a sports-related employee gets fired for protecting a pedophile. Weird how the police never stop them with tanks and tear gas, right?

Good point. They are wrong too.

For decades, the black folks in Ferguson have been profiled, arrested and incarcerated for the most minor of offenses. Do you think perhaps they’re getting a bit pissed off at being targeted by a predominantly white police force?

“What other groups in America protest like this?”

Ever hear of Clive Bundy and his band of merry snipers?

Are you justifying looting, damaging businesses of innocent store owners; throwing objects and shooting at the police because they get profiled? If my community had a history of crimes which fit a particular profile, I would not be upset if the police stopped me and asked questions if I fit the description; because I would be comforted knowing they were doing their job and watching out for us.

I’m having a problem drawing a correlation with the Bundy ranch and these violent rioters. Would you care to elaborate?

I’m not justifying anything, I’m just commenting on why they may be upset. The cops in Ferguson don’t merely stop black guys and “ask questions”. They shoot first and ask questions rarely.
The Bundy incident happened because Cliven thought he was too good to pay taxes, so he had his sniper thugs hiding on roofs with their sights trained on the cops. Very heroic.
Funny, when white folk protest government for infringing on (what they consider) their rights (Cliven Bundy), they’re hailed as defending thier constitution rights. When blacks protest for the exact same reasons, they’re “behaving like un-caged animals”.

So you’re going with the ‘Uppity negroes’ defense. Charming.

      • Always Right August 18th, 2014 at 19:04

Sorry, but I never mentioned the race of the protesters. I’m more interested in their behavior. Do you have to be uppity in order to behave in a civilized manner?

Geezus dude, your comments are public you know. We can read them.

It would better suit your party to leave that sort of rhetoric behind.

I’d remove the “too.” Responding to police brutality with violence is not a riot, it’s an uprising. They didn’t start this shit.
