Bowe Bergdahl Venturing Out In Public, With Help

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who had been tortured as a prisoner of war by the Taliban, continues his recovery:

[Bergdahl] has been allowed to venture off the Texas military base where he is receiving care as part of his “reintegration process” into society, a U.S. Army spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Bergdahl has been allowed to go, with supervision, to a grocery store, restaurants, shopping centers and a library as part of the process of getting him comfortable with being out in public, Army spokeswoman Arwen Consaul said.

Bergdahl, 28, has been receiving care at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio since returning to the United States on June 13. He initially was being treated at Brooke Army Medical Center at the fort but was shifted last week to outpatient care at the military base. …

Bergdahl’s “reintegration process” has slowly increased his exposure to social settings and groups of people, giving him “a little bit more every day,” Consaul said.

Oh please don’t tell me he’s allowed to read papers and watch the media. The poor guy has been condemned by Republicans.

I’m sure they are easing him into it. The guy also came home to find out that Peyton Manning was a Bronco now and that Hannah Montana is now a stripper, twerker , what ever you call her now. I don’t envy him when they do let him read the papers.

My guess is that they can’t keep him from all of it, but hopefully since the fervor has subsided he won’t see the worst of it right away.

I’m sure he’ll hear about it. The truth always comes out, but I like to wait for the facts. So to me, right now he’s a former POW unless evidence proves otherwise.

As the father of two sons who fought in the Middle East, one in active combat, I’m glad the man’s home.

I’m very sorry that so many of my fellow country men don’t feel the same.

If Bush had been President this would have never been an issue and he would have been welcomed home and given every chance at resuming a normal life. His use as a surrogate battering ram against Obama is such a shameful act that I don’t know how the Right Wing will ever be able to live down their shame when the cold facts come to light

I think Sgt. Bergdahl’s case is a classic example of the mindless hostility which permeates conservative America. Just a few months before his release, right wing luminaries from Sarah Palin to Charlie Daniels were insisting that Bergdahl be brought home using whatever means necessary.

Finally, Sgt. Bergdahl is released. But unfortunately in some dark corner office of the right wing noise machine, the folks who distribute the daily marching orders and talking points decided that the release of this soldier would be another excellent opportunity to leverage unhinged Obama-hatred into fund raising dollars and website clicks.

So, without a shred of factual information, Bergdahl was declared to be a deserter and a traitor. The trail of social media support was scrubbed with a thoroughness that a CIA cleanup crew would envy. It was now intolerable that President Obama had compromised national security on behalf of a cowardly traitor.

The faithful at FOX, DailyCaller, TownHall etc lapped it up like mother’s milk. They served as judge, jury and executioner, as convinced of Bergdahl’s guilt as they were of the imminent skewed poll Romney landslide.

Of course, when the facts come out and demonstrate that Bergdahl is not a traitor or even a deserter, not one of these ideologues will offer an apology. I think it shows that words like “family values” “patriotism” and “pro life” are just empty words for those people. Pro life patriots who believe in family values do not allow uninformed ignorance and hatred to destroy a man’s reputation.

I honestly thought the lowest thing the right wing has done so far is demonizing this tortured POW. Until yesterday, when that angry mob attacked those buses filled with children refugees.
Tearing the country apart is their plan to ‘take back their country”…if they can’t have everything their way, then they will destroy it for everybody, that is the full function of terrorism.

There are some pretty terrible people in this world, that’s for sure. Both the groups you mention in the post certainly qualify for positions towards the top of the list of mega-creeps.

It’s amazing the hatred for America, our troops, and their fellow citizens these folks hold in their hearts. I pity them. I can’t imagine how awful it must be to be one of those people protesting the care of needy children, or spewing hatred at a fragile, damaged man that we broke by sending him off to kill/be killed to ‘protect our freedom’.

      It’s all very sad.
