GOP Congressman Suddenly Wants Flags Lowered Only For Americans

James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin objected to the lowering of flags to honor Nelson Mandela, saying a tribute “should be for mourning Americans and not for foreign leaders.”  But when President Bush lowered flags for Pope John Paul II, Sensenbrenner issued an official statement mourning the Pope, for whom he previously lobbied to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. That’s the highest honor the United States can give a civilian. Who knows? Maybe he tought the Pope was American.
