Mandela Brings People Together Even In Death: Obama Shakes Hands With Raul Castro

President Obama shook hands with Cuban President Raul Castro, proving that even at his memorial, Nelson Mandela was able to bring people together who otherwise would not have crossed paths.

The move was seen as something of an unprecedented display between the leaders of two nations that have been at odds for more than a half-century. Both presidents, however, were in line to speak at the service.

During a powerful speech praising Mandela’s life, Obama included a line that many thought was aimed at Castro, among others.

“There are too many leaders who claim solidarity with Madiba’s struggle for freedom, but do not tolerate dissent from their own people,” Obama said.
