University Outs, Ousts, Then Demands Student Repay Thousands For Being Lesbian

Just one semester before graduating college student Danielle Powell got kicked out of school. Powell says she was also treated “like a sexual predator” by campus authorities– all because she’s gay.

The former Grace University volleyball team player, student and homeless shelter volunteer has filed a petition to protest her treatment from the school. The conservative Christian college, based out of Omaha, Nebraska, formerly investigated her for being a lesbian. She was also brought before a judiciary board, a subject of surveillance to which Powell referred to as a “witch hunt,” all of which resulted in her being “outed” before her parents, and in a way she said was, “sooner than I would have liked.” Grace University also insists Powell return the scholarship money, for the semester they expelled her from in 2012, for being a lesbian.

Executive Vice President Michael James said Grace University’s student handbook forbids “sexually immoral behaviour.”

Quoting from the handbook, James stated: “Any student involved in sexually immoral behavior, including premarital sex, adultery, and homosexual acts, is at minimum placed on University probation and may be subject to a Judiciary Hearing.”

The Change.org petition idea hatched out of a video of Powell’s then-girlfriend proposing to her at a Macklemore concert. The video, which went viral, has since become a catalyst for the newlywed’s new role in LGBT activism.
