Obama’s Broken Promise

Bo, the new White House dog, is cute, alright. And he fits the need to have a hypoallergenic pet in light of daughter Malia’s allergies.  However, of great importance to animal lovers, myself included, was the vow to adopt from an animal shelter, rather than to acquire a breeder dog, when so many animals are in need of good homes.

He originally made this promise to Dr. Jana Kohl, the author of “A Rare Breed of Love” — a book about a three-legged rescue dog and puppy mill survivor named Baby.

So touched was he by Baby’s story that then-Senator Obama agreed to appear in Kohl’s book holding the dog. This photo then became the cover for American Dog magazine in January.He originally made this promise to Dr. Jana Kohl, the author of “A Rare Breed of Love” – a book about a three-legged rescue dog and puppy mill survivor named Baby.

Approximately three million dogs and cats are euthanized each year.  The White House can claim that since this isn’t Bo’s first home it gets a pass. Bo was given back to Ted Kennedy’s family after it lived in a home where he didn’t get along with other dogs, so he is considered a “second chance” pet.  But while they didn’t go to a puppy mill, some animal rescue advocates feel this is just a technicality and that the president should have kept his original intent to adopt a shelter pet.
